Matrix man joins CSI

Las Vegas gets a new recruit.

It was reported that Laurence Fishburne was in talks to join CSI: Crime Scene Investigation after leading man William Petersen (Gil Grissom) leaves the show this fall. CBS has yesterday issued a press release confirming Fishburne's addition to the CSI cast. "CBS asked us, 'Who's at the top of your dream list?'" said executive producers Carol Mendelsohn and Naren Shankar. "Without hesitation, we said Laurence Fishburne. He is a powerful and intense actor, with an incredible range. Mr. Fishburne is also a talented writer and director. If you distill CSI down to its essence, it's a collaboration-and we are so looking forward to collaborating with Mr. Fishburne. For all of us at CSI, this is truly a dream."

Fishburne will join the crime drama during the ninth episode of the upcoming ninth season. The character is a former pathologist with a current career as a college lecturer teaching criminalistics. He seeks to understand criminal behavior and why people commit violent acts. He sees disturbing similarities between himself and the criminals he studies. After working with the CSI team on a murder investigation, Fishburne's character will join the crime lab as a Level 1 CSI. "I am elated and delighted to be joining the cast of CSI," said Fishburne. "I look forward to a wonderful collaboration with the creative and talented team of such a successful and distinguished show."

Chanelling Ellen Ripley?

Lucy Lawless - aka Xena - had (has?) a recurring role in Battlestar Gallactica and now her Warrior Hero buddy Renee O'Connor - aka Gabrielle - stars in a web series called Ark. Tank top. Check. Toned arms. Check.

Is it just me or is Renee chanelling some Ellen Ripley ;)

The accent is icing on the cake

Currently listening to Tori Amos (album: A piano - The collection)

First off: Sharleen Spiteri's solo album was released several weeks ago and is selling well. On October 6th Mercury will release a deluxe version of the album. It isn't a CD with bonus DVD as stated (wrongly) on some sites, but an enhanced CD with video footage and bonus audio material packed in a digipack.

The following interview is from a British television program called "Loose Women" (it aired on August 1st):

I'd forgotten she used to be a hair dresser!

Sometimes I just can hardly understand what she's sayin:

Anyhoo, let's go back in time some 14 years:

If you think that song sounds very familiar; yes, it's the theme song to sit com "Ellen". Sharleen wrote it

First gay Muslim character for US cable TV

A friend of mine posted this (thanks,

20080722haazsleiman

"This would be Sleiman's first time as a principal character on a television series, and he is breaking ground as "the only gay character of Middle Eastern descent currently on the air and one of the few to have ever been portrayed on television." After playing a series of improbably handsome Muslim terrorists in crime shows, it was a strong move on Sleman's part to take a role with some meat."

Sara Sidle's return to CSI

After leaving CSI: Crime Scene Investigation midway through season eight, Jorja Fox (Sara Sidle) didn't expect to return so quickly. "When I left in October, it was so decisive--everybody got me a goodbye cake. It's a surprise for me to be back, especially this soon," Fox told TV Guide.

Fox knew when she left that it wouldn't be the end. "Let's just say the door was left open," she said. "The kindest thing that the writers did for Sara Sidle was to walk her out in one piece. I had an amazing, beautiful, honorable, dignified exit." Part of Sara saying goodbye meant leaving Gil Grissom (William Petersen) behind. "It was decided she was just split from Grissom," Fox explained. "As a couple, they are a little dysfunctional in some ways, but in other ways, they are fabulous. In areas of communicating their hearts, it's never been a specialty for either of them."

If Sara had spoken to Grissom before leaving, Fox said, he might have convinced her to stay in Vegas. Instead, they went in a different direction with the pair when she departed. "An executive producer asked me, 'What would Sara say in a letter?' And I responded, 'I'll write something down and I will send it to you.' I never expected in a million years that it would become in the letter," she said.

Fox's return will include the third episode of the season. "It involves an old friend of Sara's who has to confront a [life or] death situation with his wife," Fox explained. She filmed the episode during the last week of May. CSI Files previously provided a spoiler report (contains major spoilers) for the episode "The Happy Place, which was originally rumored to be the second episode of the ninth season. The report reveals the likely identity of Sara's "old friend".

Fox kept up with CSI after she left. "When I heard I was returning, there were certain parts of last season that I felt Sara would be aware of," she explained. "I watched as much as I could." The actress may be returning to CSI for the beginning of the ninth season, but she said she isn't ready to do a new television show. "It will be so hard to follow up CSI," she said. "No matter what I do, it's big shoes to fill. If I'm going to do TV, then my loyalty and my heart belong to CSI."

Pick up the June 23-29 issue of TV Guide for the full interview.

Thank you, Dorothy Snarker for tuning me onto Sarah Haskins. She works for the cable TV channel Current (Al Gore’s station). Keep your motor running, baby!

When I was visiting Niagara Falls, ON, several years ago ("escaping" Toronto for two days) it coincided with Labor Day weekend. The weather was beautiful. And loads of people went for a weekend trip to enjoy the last weekend of the Summer vacation and to enjoy the sunshine. I remember wanting to cross the street near the waterfalls, but stopping when I heard the unmistakable budda-budda-budda sound that makes a Harley Davidson. Curious I looked in the direction it came from and it didn't take too long before a group of four rode by. What surprised me in a good way was that all four of them were women! (The blonde one with the braid was very cute.)

Anyway, there still aren't enough women who ride motorbikes... (I promised my mom I wouldn't.) So, imagine my response to this video:

Shirley Manson gaat acteren

UK hit series "Bad Girls" gets remake for HBO

Currently listening to Sharleen Spiteri (song: That was a lie)

According to this article pay cable channel HBO and Alan Ball (American Beauty, Six Feet Under) are working on an American version of the TV series.

Eileen Gallagher, one of the co-creators of the original series and CEO of Shed Prods., which produced "Bad Girls" for ITV, will be one of the executive producers.

The prison drama, which bowed out in 2006 after eight seasons, revolves around the staff and inmates of a women's prison.
Co-created by Gallagher, Maureen Chadwick and Ann McManus, "Bad Girls" has been praised for its portrayal of the complex relationships among female inmates. Its U.S. rights previously were held by FX.

Let's have a look at my two favorite character on Bad Girls (yes, I quit watching after the ending of season three - no surprise there, eh?):

Louise Lombard's "Kiss of death"

In "Kiss of death" Louise Lombard is Kay Rousseau who returns to work to head up the crime team, following the death of her child. The interesting thing here is that the story is told from different points of view. It really is like different pieces to one puzzle.

Maybe it's just me, but did I catch her unconciously slip into an American accent a couple times? Not really strange given the fact she is CSI's Sofia Curtis. (I do miss her swagger in Kiss of Death.) There was a brief ewww moment when she kissed the suspect to get a confession.

Jorja Fox's return to CSI

Currently listening to Dresden Dolls (album: No, Virginia)

I was surfing the innerweb when I stumbled upon an interview from transgender comedian Ian Harvie with Jorja Fox. I think it's great to see the actress laugh and joke along (something Sara Sidle rarely did):

WARNING: mild spoilers ahead.

Jorja Fox (Sara Sidle) bid farewell to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation after the episode "Goodbye and good luck" midway through season eight. Fox said she would return to the show at some point, but she couldn't reveal when that would be. It was later stated that Sara wouldn't be back in season eight.

But Sara's return will happen sooner than expected. Fox has signed a deal to appear in the season nine premiere this fall. The specific details of the comeback are unclear, although it is confirmed that Fox won't be appearing in a flashback.

Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan), who was shot in the season finale, is also set to return in the fall. In the latest issue of TV Guide, executive producer Carol Mendelsohn said Dourdan would be back, but "not just in flashbacks."

And talking about TV Guide: openly gay actor Eric Millegan - better known as Dr. Zack Addy on Bones - shocked fans when it was revealed in last Monday's season finale that the sweet and mild mannered doc's a villain! Read more on it here.

I don't watch Grey Anatomy (too much whining on relationships, or lack thereof), but when this aired last week I couldn't help but snicker at the ending in the elevator. The look on her face? Priceless.

The season's finale ended with more of where that came from:

I hope for more Sapphic action in the next season. Then maybe I might tune in... Oh, who am I kidding. As if!

Soup Chef joins CSI

Two weeks ago I sent my friend Cecile a text message to let her know Dana (Erin Daniels) was on an episode of CSI:NY

And now I hear the Soup Chef (Lauren Lee Smith) is joining CSI as Bryce Adams, a "flirtatious, witty and strong-willed non-conformist" who is hired as a CSI on the night-shift team led by Grissom (William Peterson). Let's take a little trip down memory lane, eh?

Oh, and to finish it off, here's Kate Moennig on an episode of CSI:Miami

What's up with the lime green bikinis? That's so not you, Shane.

And just to bring you up to speed on my dislocated shoulder story: I'll give you the short version. My friend Sacha told me off for not seeing a doctor right after the incident on Friday before driving me to the ER. I had to repeat my story several times, and every time I was met with a stare of disbelief. A male nurse grinned and asked me if I had watched Rambo. Huh? Two hours and two X-rays later I emerged from the ER with a super sling, which supposed to support my injured shoulder. Now I have to make a check up appointment... Most of my friends told me to go see a doctor, but I figured my shoulder's popped back so everything should be fine now. Wrong. I know that now. (But I hope there won't be a next time.) And it looks like I will visit San Fran wearing the sling. Which blows. Big time...

Another actor to leave CSI

I read several days ago that Gary Dourdan (Warrick Brown) is leaving CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Now I read that another actor is leaving the franchise. Khandi Alexander (Alexx Woods) will reportedly say goodbye to CSI: Miami at the end of the season.

Alexander has been on Miami since the show began, but season six will be her last. The actress is said to have had "issues" with some aspect of the show, according to Ausiello. CBS would not comment about Alexander's reported departure.

As with Dourdan, rumor has it that the network is already looking to replace Alexander's character. While there is no name or description for Alexx's replacement in the medical examiner's office, the character is rumored to be male.

Personally, I think this is unfortunate; the fact is that the majority of the cast is male, and the few women in the cast are Caucasian. Alexander leaving the show means one less character of color on my tv screen.

Interessant (?)

Nice crotch shot - KEENER! *lol*

Elizabeth Keener (Showtime's "The L Word") will star as a lesbian FBI agent in an hourlong drama series being developed at gay network here!

The project is described as a cross between "The Silence of the Lambs" and "Twin Peaks."

Keener's character juggles personal demons with the demands of her extended undercover assignment in a mysterious small town, and soon finds herself increasingly enmeshed in the lives of the town's inhabitants.

Keener, the younger sister of Catherine Keener, will have a hand in developing the show. The actress played villainous SheBar co-owner Dawn Denbo in a half-dozen episodes of "L Word's" fifth season. The lesbian drama was recently renewed for a sixth and final season. (Reuters)

Mistresses

So, I first saw the mini series on the BBC a short while ago. Despite not being a fan of chick flicks, I was interested in the storylines of these four women. Fortunately for me they were all well written.
Dutch commercial tv station RTL4 aired the series (6 one-hour episodes) shortly after the final episode was aired in the UK. My friend IM started to watch the series - and was surprised I've seen it. I filled her in on some of the details she didn't picked up on. And when it was time for the last episode to air (last night) I offered to record it for her - since she had to be somewhere.
Now, I have a nifty VCR/DVD-recorder, with all the tv channels preset. I've recorded stuff before (not just for myself) so it'd be easy as pie. Or so I thought.
Even though I set the timer and channel, I came home to find out the channels weren't preset anymore and the recorder wasn't recording "Mistresses". [Insert bad cursing] I was livid. Hoe could that go wrong? I couldn't blame anyone: I'm the techie. I'm the only one who knows how all the appliances work.
Just my luck, eh?

I dreaded having to tell my friend. Fortunately, she was cool about it; she managed to get home on time and saw most of the final episode. Still, I can't help but feel slightly annoyed at failing.

PS it also helped that Shelley Conn (who played Jessica) is eye candy and has, in my opinion, the most interesting story line.

"Do we hug now?"

Did you get her number? ... Heh. I did..."

Do we hug now?

Of twee. Of drie.

Heh.

No Fox on CSI season 8

Earlier this season, Jorja Fox (Sara Sidle) left CSI: Crime Scene Investigation after her character went through an emotional ordeal. Since Fox's exit, rumors have circulated about the possibility of Sara coming back. As CSI Files previously reported, Fox has promised to return to CSI in the future. It now seems that the character and actress will be missing until at least season nine.

fox_120607.jpg

CSI has six new episodes on tap, starting April 3, but Fox won't be in any of them. As Billy Masters recently reported on PrideSource, Fox confirmed that she won't be returning in season eight. Whether she will keep her promise and return in season nine--and beyond--is unknown at this point.

Tila Tequila?

Biseksuele 'bachelorette' trekt miljoenen kijkers

"Little mosque on the prairie"

Just for Laughs, The Outer Limits, PSI Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal etc.
En na een jaartje wachten kan
"Little Mosque on the Prairie" (dat overigens niks te maken heeft met "Little House on the Prairie") ook aan dat lijstje gevoegd worden. Wat mij betreft. (In Canada is seizoen 2 bezig.)

"Fallen Idol"

Ok, I'm probably one of the few people NOT watching Idols. (I'm talking about the Dutch version here.) Why? Watching people audition and making complete A-holes of themselves while thinking they're "all that", when in fact they're not, is just not my idea of amusement. Having said that, I won't deny the fact that there are a few really good ones. A few that are really talented.
The thing is in this day and age it all seems style over substance. Don't get me wrong: a pretty face is nice, but what if at the end of the day that is all there is? And at the end of the day we all grow old, so...
Anyhoo, when I heard a former Idol competitor sing her rendition of "Iris" at 7:30 in the morning (on Monday) I was very pleasantly surprised; this lady can actually sing, and has a distinctive voice - in my opinion. Her name is Pauline and I heard she got voted off this past weekend.
Watch this clip and see/hear what I'm talking about.

Gil Grissom's goodbye

Jorja Fox has already left the show. Actor William "Billy" Petersen is looking at Grissom's exit:

"It's hard to play the same character all the time; at some point you want to be released from that," Petersen told the British Radio Times. "I understood that going into CSI to a certain degree, but you don't know how long it's going to last. I think the time is coming when it will be the right choice for Grissom and the audience for me to do something else. I sort of know when, but it's between me and the producers."

Over the past few years, Petersen already managed to scale back his workload on CSI, taking time off to star in a play, but also forcing producers to change the way the show is filmed. "I was burning out," Petersen said, describing the often grueling workdays he had to face. "I said, 'I can't continue to do this at this pace because it makes me unhealthy, and it's too difficult to have a life.' On a lot of shows they work too hard, too fast. Everybody starts to hate each other and all of a sudden the show implodes. Now we have designed it so that we can survive."

If Petersen does stay on the show for a while longer, a reason might be that he feels responsible for the many people the show employs. The actor related a tale of his family's furniture business, the example of which provided Petersen with a strong work ethic. "[My family never makes] any money and they work long hours, and I've asked my dad and brother over the years, 'Why don't you sell up and retire?' But they say it's because it gives livelihoods to 20 people. I was always impressed by that. On CSI we give work to 200 people and I feel a real obligation to them. I believe acting is just what I do for work."

Even if Petersen does eventually leave, the show will probably continue without him, and there'll always be CSI: Miami and CSI: New York, too. But Petersen, who in the past has been deeply critical of the spin-offs, still seems unhappy with their existence. "I still think that the other shows could have been done in a more interesting way. I think they just rubber-stamped them and stuck more of them out there. CSI: Miami does 24 shows a year, CSI: NY does 24; everyone gets tired. There's a whole lot of stories we can't do because of the other shows, and that's a problem."

I just play gay." en waarop Shane met een droog "Right." reageert. Ge-wel-dig!

Moving furniture - bwahahahahaha!

Appetizer

I found yet another trailer teaser of the new season of L-word online. And tease it indeed does:

The thing is that no Dutch tv station has picked up the show after season two! Even in this little liberal country it's the ratings that count. (Well, something that could help is not air it at some gawdawful hour, when you just know that most people prefer their sleep over a tv series about women-loving-women because they need to be at work on time the next morning.)

Jorja off my mind (?)

"Now I can date my co-stars."

Actrice Suzanne Mara
Ach ja. Whatever ;)

"Actually, she's kinda hot."

In this Shark episode: skirt chasing defense attorney hits on (seemingly) straight lawyer... And I love her response!

Also, in this episode of Bones, it's revealed that Angela Montenegro is not (as I already suspected) straight and narrow:

The way Angela reminiscingly (is that a word?) smiles and says "Roxy" says more than a 1,000 words ever can...

Welcome... Guys

I'm probably one of the few who don't watch Desperate Housewives (although Felicity Huffman rocks). But when I first read about a gay couple being introduced to this hit series several months ago, it piqued my interest ;p

SPOILER WARNING!

Wisteria Lane welcomes its first gay couple. The story between Bob, Lee and Susan is funny and it keeps getting worse. Watch the vids.

Fox is leaving. More Lombard, please

It's official, and it's been all over the press; Jorja Fox is leaving the show. On her own terms. The writers even left room for her to re-appear in guest spots. This is what she's said on the topic:

“It’s my call — and a very, very difficult one, something I’ve been thinking about for a long, long time. It's one of the hardest decisions I've made in my life. It has nothing to do with my contract, nothing to do with money. ... It could be the stupidest thing I've ever done in my life. Only time will tell. ... There are so many things I want to do! Some are personal. Some are professional. And I really need to do some of them before I get too old.”

Personally, I'm sad to see her go, although I understand her reasons completely. That said, I hope Sofia gets more air time - just so I can see her swagger by, chewing another tooth pick ;p

Save the cheerleader... Veronica Mars

“She’s a little messed up in the head, which makes her manipulative and out to get what she wants….She very much enjoys her power and the emotional power it gives her over other people…There’s a very interesting dynamic between her and Claire, in terms of what is and what is not. There’s a deeper relationship there than people are expecting.”

Women's Murder Club

OMG, maybe it is a good thing this show 's not airing in my country. Yet. Look at all the hot women! Angie Harmon and Laura Harris. Yowza! I'd love to see them hook up :)
Well, a girl can dream, eh?

Sandwich, anyone? Heh...

My Fox fix is coming to an end

WARNING: mild spoilers!

Sara Sidle may have survived in the desert, but Jorja Fox is saying goodbye to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

Fox herself did not confirm that she was leaving CSI, but multiple sources have done so according to Ask Ausiello. Fox's contract expired at the end of season seven, and there have only been rumors since then about whether she would remain on CSI. Fox did not sign a new long-term deal with the show, and Sara will be making her exit in November.

When asked what caused her to leave the show when the season is partially over, Fox could not answer because she is still under contract. "I'm not actually allowed to talk about storylines that haven't aired yet," she explained. "So since I've already been sitting in a pile of secrecy since last April, I'm going to have to keep the secret a little longer. I apologize." Fox also would not state whether the rumors about her refusing to show up for filming at the end of season seven were true. She said that she makes it a point not to answer those types of questions. However, she did say that "it was true that my contract was up, and so CBS and I had been in active conversations since about January of '07."

Fox's contract ran out a year before the rest of the cast because of a tradition. "[E]very couple of years, people put in for a raise," she said. "And a couple of years ago everybody put in for a raise, and I decided not to take the raise that was offered me. And if I had taken that raise, it would've added a year to my contract. I'm the only one who didn't take the raise." While Fox said that CSI has been a rewarding experience, she explained that, at the time this raise was offered, she was having doubts. After the firing and re-hiring of herself and George Eads (Nick Stokes), she was not sure if she wanted to sign up for extra time on the show. "And the raise was terrible, to be frank," she added. "An extra year for that amount of money? No thank you. Thank you very much, it's very flattering, but no thank you."

Despite the fact that Fox is leaving the show, she said that she has enjoyed being a part of the CSI family. "I've been one of the luckiest people in the history of TV getting to play the character of Sara," she said. She particularly enjoyed the storyline between her character and Gil Grissom (William Petersen). "I feel like the writers have been extremely generous in terms of giving me a lot to do, especially all the interesting relationship stuff between Sara and Grissom," she said. "I've always had mountains of subtext to do, all under the umbrella of this procedural, which actually made it more fun."

The fate of Grissom and Sara's relationship is up in the air as Fox prepares to exit the show. Executive producer Jonathan Littman stated over the hiatus that the storyline between the two would end in season eight. "I can't contradict what one of our producers said, but I can only tell you from my experience, I don't think you're going to get that," Fox explained. "This might sound vain, but the story of Sara and Grissom is a little like a fable. And most great fables don't really have 100 percent resolution."

Fox did not reveal any information about her remaining episodes on the show, but she did speak about how the season is shaping up overall. "There's going to be a wealth of information that we're going to find out about Sara and Grissom in season eight," she said. "We shot five episodes so far, and I think it's going to be a really exciting, interesting season. The writers have done a phenomenal job. There have been so many twists and turns already, and little bombs that we've dropped, I'm already blown away. I'm like, 'Where's this going? We're only in episode five.'"

The full interview can be read at TVGuide.com Fox's final episode is expected to air on November 9 and is rumored to be titled "Hello, Goodbye".

I am so glad my country is behind when it comes to airing CSI episodes...

John Barrowman in OUT

John Barrowman has made the adult sci-fi series Torchwood a smash hit in Britain. On the eve of its U.S. arrival he talks marriage, making out with Cher, and emerging gay heroes.

John Barrowman is easing into his first coffee of the day and recalling a reporter’s effusive—but loaded—compliments about his colorful Etro shirt. “I knew she wanted me to say it was flamboyant, but I thought, I’m going to make you work for it. Finally she got around to a question about my life. I said, ‘Oh, my God, you said gay! I’m so proud of you. It only took you 20 minutes!’ ” He leans back against the booth and laughs broadly, a hand on his stomach like he’s trying to restrain himself.

“I have no problem talking about it,” he rushes to clarify, as if it’s possible to miss the mischievous gleam in his eyes. “I’m proud of what I’ve done. I’m proud of who I am, and I’m proud to be gay. No qualms.”

Born in Scotland and raised in Illinois, Barrowman conquered London’s West End theaters before seducing television viewers as a sexually insatiable, swashbuckling traveler of space and time in the hugely successful 2005 revival of the cult BBC show Doctor Who. Now the United Kingdom’s biggest triple threat has returned stateside to give us a glimpse of the future: a 21st-century matinee idol who makes it all look easy.

Officially out since an interview in England’s Gay Times magazine in 2004, Barrowman was in truth hardly ever in and has seemed incapable of keeping quiet about his sexuality since. One minute he’s talking with starry eyes about his partner of 15 years, and in the next he rambles about his raunchy fantasies, frequently accompanying himself with a flailing, X-rated pantomime. And he does it all with the same easy elegance he brings to the character that’s made him a household name in the United Kingdom.

Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness is a charming cad who hails from a distant tomorrow but has stolen all his moves from the scruffy con men of our cinematic past. Both the character and the actor leave a kind of time-traveling déjà vu in their wake. To talk with Barrowman is to forget for a minute that we don’t all already live in a time and place where macho leading roles are handed out to unrepentantly gay men without a single discussion as to how audiences might respond.

But that’s exactly what happened when the executives in charge of reviving Britain’s family-friendly drama Doctor Who set about casting Jack. “John is a very infectious person and actor,” says Julie Gardner, who along with Queer as Folk creator Russell T. Davies serves as an executive producer for Doctor Who. “He has huge charisma.”

Then, in an effort to expand the Who brand to a more mature, prime-time audience, Davies created Torchwood, a Jack-helmed spin-off that’s more X Files than Star Trek. Jack was given his own team of attractive alien investigators and sent out to save the world—or at least modern-day Cardiff, the bustling capital city of Wales. When not busy shooting at unidentified objects, he revels in his well-advertised “omnisexuality,” which largely involves trying to get into the pants of every man, woman, and creature who crosses his path. [See sidebar.]

Back on Planet Barrowman, it’s normal to be inundated by kids in supermarkets seeking autographs on their Captain Jack action figures. The Royal Air Force even asked him to do a fly-by and pose for in-character photo ops. While such a request of an openly gay actor is unthinkable in the current climate of the U.S. military, the United Kingdom drafted a new code of conduct in 2000 allowing gay men and women to serve openly in its armed services. “That’s why I said I’d do it.” Out comes the wicked grin: “I’d like to think my pilot was gay. How many gay boys want to go in the cockpit? I did that!”

It’s also practically a given that everyone who talks about either Barrowman or Captain Jack eventually uses the word hero. “A cheeky hero,” Gardner says, laughing, “most definitely.”

Barrowman’s family relocated to Illinois when he was 8, right about the time he began to notice he was far more interested in boys than girls. In his new Midwestern life, Barrowman says, “If you were queer, there was something wrong with you.” But he has little interest in dwelling on an angst-ridden coming-of-age story. “I had no angst, no anxiety,” he insists.

“I think he had a harder time than I probably knew about,” says his older sister, Carole Barrowman, recounting a story of John being bullied that she hadn’t heard until she helped write his autobiography, due out in 2008.

“I played flute, do you know?” he points out dryly, his American accent peppered with British slang. “I was in choir. I wanted to be a cheerleader—I liked those tight pants, and you would get to go to competitions where there were other boys who were probably like me. But I never pushed that. I could have ostracized myself, but I loved the social aspect. I did make-out sessions with girls while in my head I was going, What am I doing?”

His male friends helped in their own way. “We’d be watching dirty movies, the other boys at one end of the sofa and me at the other, and everyone’s giving it—” He mimes jerking himself off. “And I’m having a little look.” He also nursed a serious crush on a close friend but never made a move. “I thought by just being gay you would get AIDS.” He shakes his head angrily. “Stupid fucks—not us, them [for not teaching us about it].”

“And, OK,” he admits, “people called me a fag, but I ignored it.”

Escape came in the dubious form of a singing gig at Opryland USA, a now-defunct Nashville theme park, where he finally met other gay men. “I had my first kiss, and that was lovely,” he remembers. “But I didn’t do anything really full-on until I was in my 20s.”

When he finally came out to his parents, he presented them with two options, he says: “ ‘One is that you turn your back on me, and I walk out this door. Or two, my life is going to be a journey, and I’m going to do, I hope, great things. And I want you to be a part of it.’ ”
“They actually said, ‘We are a bit appalled that you would think we would turn our back on you.’ And my dad said, ‘I don’t understand a lot of it yet, but I will.’ And they have.”

Behind every hero is a great man. According to Barrowman, Scott Gill, 44, has “a body like an Armani model and a cock like a donkey,” a description that can’t be news to Gill but might make the shy British architect uncomfortable. He prefers to stay out of the spotlight—so much so, in fact, that despite Barrowman’s fame in the United Kingdom, this is the first interview he’s ever given.

Across 5,000-odd miles and two weeks, Barrowman and Gill each tell me their love story, and like two guilty men in an interrogation, their fairy-tale versions match up almost perfectly.

“In 1993, I was doing my first straight play,” Barrowman says, and winks. “You know, no singing or dancing.” The play was Rope (the same adapted for film by Alfred Hitchcock), and a mutual friend dragged Gill to a performance.

“The lights went up and there’s John and two other guys naked,” Gill says. Barrowman was nude for seven minutes, and Gill recalls his stage presence, without a shred of irony, as being “like a lighthouse on a dark night.” He remembers thinking, “That’s the guy I’d like to have a relationship with.”

Their friend brought Gill backstage, where Barrowman was still getting changed. “I was pulling my pants up,” Barrowman says, “but then again, he’d already seen it all. When I turned around and saw him, that was it. I just knew as soon as I looked at him: That’s the man I’m going to spend the rest of my life with.”

The rest of their lives had to wait a while. Barrowman had dinner plans (with Sarah Brightman), and both men were somehow too nervous to call for a proper date. Gill says every time he caught Barrowman’s new TV show, a series called Live & Kicking, he’d think, “Shit, that means the guy’s really out of my league now.” Months later, Barrowman was test-driving a new Jaguar in London’s Soho neighborhood and saw Gill on the street. This time he stopped to say hello. Gill wanted to know if the wheels were a gift from a sugar daddy; Barrowman wanted Gill to come see him in Sunset Boulevard that night.

They went out after, “to dinner with Cher,” Gill says. “That was our first date. There were all these paparazzi taking pictures of him kissing Cher. But he went back to my place.”

They promptly kicked their respective boyfriends to the curb and moved in together, completely opposite personalities be damned. “I’m like a pressure cooker that’s always going,” Barrowman says, “and Scott is so laid-back.” Gill is the self-described “hand on John’s shoulder,” pulling him back from an excessive shopping spree, reminding him to eat, and looking after him when Barrowman’s crashed out from a string of back-to-back shooting days and social commitments.

As he reads this, Gill may wish he had been in Los Angeles for Barrowman’s description of his darkest fantasy, divulged with little prompting by this interviewer: “I have a fetish for leather that I’ve never lived out. I would like to be blindfolded and guided in a room, with everyone else in chaps, in harnesses and slings, and just—” He leans forward to intimate, “I’m a control freak. So I’d be taken out of my control zone.”

He says he’s never tried—“if anybody out there would like to arrange it, give me a ring”—and that if he asked, he thinks Gill would be willing. “But sometimes fantasies should remain fantasies. We are kind of conservative in that way.”

Not like Republican-conservative, he says suddenly, noting that their relationship rules are fairly forgiving. “It’s a decision of whether you let the little humps and bumps destroy everything,” he says. “You may have a little wank somewhere, but it’s not a relationship killer.”
Last December they celebrated 15 years together with a civil partnership ceremony in Cardiff, which was attended by friends and family and stalked by tabloid photographers. They were on the evening news, and their wedding portraits made the cover of the U.K. magazine OK!

Gill was less than thrilled about all the attention. “But I enjoy the fact that John loves it so much,” he says. “That makes it easier to tolerate. It’s not my kind of thing at all. He does have an amazing energy, though. He comes off a stage and I fall in love with him all over again.”

If there’s a villain in this story, it’s the low expectations TV executives have for their audiences, especially in the United States. Gill describes Barrowman’s struggle to break through on American TV as a series of “false starts,” but it’s the polite phrasing of a sympathetic spouse.

His most notable American film role is beautifully played—a young actor who sings for and then seduces Kevin Kline’s Cole Porter in De-Lovely—but hardly a major part, or a major stretch.
When Barrowman auditioned for Will & Grace, producers said he was “too straight” to be believable. But given the way Eric McCormack’s heterosexuality provided an easy comfort zone—especially in the wake of Ellen’s cancellation—it’s not unimaginable that NBC was happy to dodge a double whammy of gay press.

When cast on CBS’s short-lived Central Park West, Barrowman was told by the studio not to discuss his sexuality, even though show creator Darren Star is openly gay. Did he follow orders? “No,” Barrowman says, shortly. “And you know, maybe it was detrimental to me, but I didn’t care. Once you’ve been put in a position of either the limelight or authority, and you are an honest and truthful human being, you are political.”

Even in the United Kingdom, “John had an agent before who was very unhappy about my ever appearing with him,” Gill says. Since he signed with Gavin Barker, an openly gay manager—with whom Barrowman agreed he should casually mention Gill during the aforementioned Gay Times interview—his career has soared.

Maybe the combination of Barrowman’s naughty wit and Captain Jack’s shoot-’em-up sex appeal will be too much for America to resist. Already committed as a host or ice dancer or special guest star to a wildly varied array of British television shows, in addition to Torchwood and a multi-episode arc on the new season of Doctor Who, Barrowman had to turn down a U.S. feature film and the role of Rob Lowe’s gay brother on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters.

After all, a hero’s journey isn’t supposed to be easy—and for Barrowman, it was growing up gay that taught him exactly the kind of brave behavior Captain Jack embodies. “It makes us more compassionate,” he says. “It’s made us grow into stronger people. We are, yeah—” He pauses and then nods emphatically. “We are heroes. And I love that.”

Sara's "Dead doll"

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!

To warn or not to warn, that is the question. Casting news, while potentially spoiler worthy, isn't necessarily considered warn worthy. However, for avid CSI fans, the appearance of a new female CSI might give off hints of an unhappy end for a current female CSI.

So, I will warn you that what follows is only spoiler-worthy if you have not seen the past two season enders for CSI. If you have, nothing I'm about to tell you about plot points will come as a surprise.

If you watch CSI at all, then you are likely aware of Jorja Fox's reported contract difficulties. At the end of this past season, viewers were left with an image of her character, Sara Sidle, trapped under a wrecked sports car in the middle of nowhere. Signs of life were, shall we say, limited. For CSI fans, the debate has been raging since before the finale ever aired about whether or not Sara would survive the crash.

The bigwigs at CBS are quick to point out that Lucas' character is a new edition, not a replacement for Jorja Fox. The question is, do we believe them? I for one, have my doubts. Sara might very well survive that car crash, but does that mean she'll stick around in Vegas? Who knows. I do know at least one thing for sure. The legions of femslash writers out there are likely to ignore Sara's death (if it happens) just as they have ignored her on screen romance with Grissom. Heh.

CBS recently released a short promo for the season eight premiere, "Dead Doll".

Continuing from season seven's cliffhanger finale, "Living Doll", Sara Sidle's life hangs in the balance. The team must rush to save her before she becomes the latest victim of the miniature killer, Natalie Davis (Jessica Collins). "Dead Doll" was written by Dustin Lee Abraham and Allen MacDonald.

Here is a transcript of the clip.

[During the night]
[Close-up of Sara Sidle's bloody face]
[The wrecked car is being lowered down on top of her]
Sara: What are you doing?
[Natalie Davis stands by, hair blowing as she watches the car being lowered]
[The car is presses down on Sara's arm]
[Sara's arm makes a crunching noise and she groans with pain]
Sara: Don't do this.
[Natalie turns and walks away]
Sara: Natalie.
[Natalie continues to walk away from the spot where Sara is trapped]
Sara: Natalie!
[Natalie drives away in a car that was waiting nearby]
[Text over: 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Season premiere, Thursday, September 27, 9/8 c']

"Dead Doll" will air September 27, 2007 on CBS.

Update 9/1: Here's another (longer) promo

Carol Mendelsohn, Ann Donahue and Pam Veasey, the showrunners of the CSI franchise, talk about being women in their field.

All three shows in the CSI franchise are overseen by women. Mendelsohn, the showrunner of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, wasn't always involved in show business. "I became a lawyer because my dad was a lawyer," she told CBS Watch Magazine. Ultimately, practicing law wasn't what she wanted to do. As "an only child who grew up sitting way too close to the TV," Mendelsohn said that she dreamed of working in Hollywood. She enrolled in a TV script-writing course at the American Film Institute and eventually made her way to Los Angeles. After working on various television series, Mendelsohn found that she "ended up stuck only in the realm of male, action-oriented TV." She was able to break away from this mold later on by working on Melrose Place for five years--only to end up being labeled again, this time as a soap opera writer. She created a soap opera pilot for CBS that did not get picked up, but Nina Tassler, then the director of development for CBS, asked Mendelsohn to work on another show which was going to be developed: CSI.

"It was a real learning curve, because at first we didn'
