"Brain. Heart. Guitar." by The Dudes

Currently listening to The Dudes (album: Brain. Heart. Guitar.)

My friend Kelly took me to a Hot Hot Heat concert last year. The Dudes were one of the supporting acts. I ended up liking The Dudes best, and wanted to buy their CD after the show. Unfortunately, I went home empty handed.

I found out yesterday that their "Brain. Heart. Guitar." album is also released in Europe.

Listening to it reminds me of that night in downtown Vancouver, drinking Long Island Iced Tea... And having a good time.

The Dudes hail from Calgary, Alberta, and their poppy rock songs seem to be fueled by brains, hearts and guitars. Former figure cracker Dan Vacon has a singing voice that even live does not disappoint. Their sense of humor shines through the lyrics. I mean, "Cup of blood" opens with "I accidentally elbowed your face on the dance floor - I'm sorry." And they seem to sing about the glory of the working class woman a lot.

They plan on touring Europe, starting late September/early October.

Do the right thing:

I could never be your woman

Personally, I don't care much for R&B and hip hop. Although, there's some old skool stuff I really like. And although the entertainment bussiness is (largely) run by the "pink maffia" there aren't many openly queer entertainers. (Luther Vandross, anyone?)

Apparently, rapper Melange Lavonne is looking for someone to play her woman in a new music video she's filming. (Her last video was all over the LOGO network and an internet viral sensation.) This is for ladies in L.A. area or willing/able to travel to L.A. at their own expense if chosen. Read carefully before responding:

She looks fine to me, but I could not be her wifey - especially if she wants the wifey to dress the hoochie mamma part.

Casting Call "Gay Marriage aka Marry Me" Video Shoot

Always grindin' and my mind is always going thinking of other ways to get out a positive message. I'm in the process of planning my next video shoot for "Marry Me aka Gay Marriage". A video advocating Gay Marriage. The song is featured on my profile off my latest Album "The Movement" so please take a listen. We will be shooting the video in the city of Burbank, California. We are looking to shoot Sept. or October, but will get back to you with exact dates. Please have transportation to arrive on set.

I am looking for a woman to play my wife in the video. The shots will be tasteful but you have to be willing to get close with me and not be shy to be in front of the camera, on camera kissing and affection. Any race, age, etc are all welcomed! I will consider all!

We are still in the planning stages as far as getting the concepts and actual dates set with the Director but it is a go.

My reasoning for picking this video is because of election year and being an advocate for Gay Marriage making it legal and making it stick not just in California but everywhere!

Thank you for wanting to be a part of "The Movement"

She's got to be".

... And the guitar she plays? A Fender Telecaster I have that one in black, and it's my favorite.

Michelle Malone holds auditions

... and I wish I could audition for a spot. But I live on the "wrong" side of the Atlantic, so fat chance of me getting a Green Card and working permit, too, eh? I mean, I'm certainly not the world's best guitarist, but I'm a solid one and reliable. And I wouldn't mind being away from home for longer stretches of time.

This is the E-mail I got earlier today (it's not a hoax - it's from a fellow musician):

MICHELLE MALONE HOLDING AUDITIONS

yes, kids, it's that time again - Michelle is looking for a drummer, a bass player and possibly a singing guitar/keys utility player - preferably in the SE region.

Michelle has a brand new CD in the can produced by Nick Didia (Sass Jordan, Train, Pearl Jam, Springsteen) - band will begin touring in OCT - no amateurs, drunks, egomaniacs, or control freaks, please. If you love Michelle Malone's music and you want to tour, send your resume and link to info@SBS-Recods.com

www.michellemalone.com

"...raucous and jubilant...somewhere between Lucinda Williams and Shelby Lynne comes Michelle Malone alternating between soulful ballads and rowdy, riffy blasters."
- ROLLING STONE

"4 out of 5 Bunnies "... on this loose and blues-stoked new album, the rough-and-tumble Malone embraces her inner Keith Richards while churning up those Southern roots with the vigor of Lucinda Williams." "
- PLAYBOY MAGAZINE

Moanin' Michelle Malone (as she is nick named) is also friends with the Indigo Girls. And it is through them that I recognized Michelle's name and bought "Beneath the Devil Moon" (after a listen) about a decade ago.

Missy Higgins = yum

I've been enjoying a song called "Steer" by Missy Higgins the past couple of days; great lyrics, and - well - Missy is very cute. Yesterday, it suddenly dawned on me that there's something in the chord progression of that song that reminds me of Melissa Etheridge's "No where to go".

Steer

Feel it falling off like clothing
Taste it rolling on your tongue
See the lights above you glowing
Oh and breathe them deep into your lungs

It was always simple, not hidden hard
You've been pulling at the strings playing puppeteer for kings
And you've had enough

But the search ends here
Where the night is totally clear
And your heart is fierce
So now you finally know that you control where you go
You can steer

So hold this feeling like a newborn
Of freedom surging through your veins
You have opened up a new door
So bring on the wind, fire and rain

It was always simple, not hidden hard
You've been played at a game called remembering your name
And you stuffed it up

But the search ends here
Where the night is totally clear
And your heart is fierce
So now you finally know that you control where you go
You can steer

'Cos you've been listening for answers
But the city screams and all your dreams go unheard

But the search ends here
Where the night is totally clear
And your heart is fierce
So now you finally know that you control where you go
You can steer
Yea get out of the box and step into the clear
'Cos now you finally know you can steer

Here is an interview with Missy in which she talks about "Steer" and coming out as bisexual. Oh, and she'll be touring the US as a support act for the Indigo Girls in September

Hey, Missy? Call me if you'd like to jam some time!

K's Choice do Coldplay

... and covered "Yellow", recently. Personally, I've heard better covers by them (like Prince's "I could never take the place of your man" or their version of "Come together" by the Beatles) and find this one pretty bland.

In the meantime Sarah's European drummer Billy (kick @$$ drummer Karen Teperberg tours with Sarah in the US - unfortunately - and recently started drumming with another band called Saucy Monky) is selling his drum kit: click here to check it out (it's in Dutch, sorry). And here's a bit of Karen showing off her skills:

Ear pleaser: Gotye

For a while now there's a catchy song that grabs my attention from the first notes on, and it makes me wanna dance and sing along. And until today I never got any further than: But give away love (GIVE IT!) / And give it for free / No strings attached / Just don’t ask for it back. Slowly it started to bug me I didn't know who the performer is (just that their Australians) or what the title to the song is, so I decided to Google it.

Apparently, whoever it is is called "Gotye" and the title to aforementioned song is (get this): learnalilgivinanlovin.

I like the lyrics to the song:

Learnalilgivinanlovin

If yer always tryin’ to get to the top
You don’t get to the bottom of nothin’!
Then you’re gone before you know it;
You’d better stop! (STOP!)
Learn a little givin’ and lovin’

It’s been done before
C’mon, do it again!
Coz if it’s good
Then you should share it round
What’s the use of keeping
all the good things that you’ve found to yourself?

Learn a little, learn a little
Learn a little givin’
Learn a little, learn a little
Learn a little givin’ and lovin’

You don’t gotta keep no other man down
For you to get up
There’s no need to worry
Just don’t give away your self-respect
Coz if it’s all you’ve got left
The rest don’t really matter now anyway honey!

But give away love (GIVE IT!)
And give it for free
No strings attached
Just don’t ask for it back

Learn a little, learn a little
Learn a little givin’
Learn a little, learn a little
Learn a little givin’ and stop!

Givin! Learn a little givin’
It’s been done before
C’mon do it again!
Learn a little, learn a little
Learn a little givin’ and lovin’

"All the times I cried" by Sharleen Spiteri

Singer/frontwoman of Scottish band Texas is busy promoting her solo album "Melody" and the video of her first single "All the times I cried" is released recently.

The video clip was shot by Olivier Dahan, the French movie director who made ‘La Vie En Rose’, the Edith Piaf biography. In the video, which was shot in a theatre in Paris, Sharleen portrays an actress who goes for an audition.

I really like the new sound and the songs off the album I've heard so far. But, the outfits don't do it for me. (That's spoken like a woman )

Apparently, some clips of an acoustic session - and photo shoot - recently popped up on the internet.

All the times I cried

It was you

Stop, I don't love you anymore

The Weakerthans

Currently listening to Arcade Fire (album: Neon Bible)

I've been listening to some Weakerthans lately. My current favorite song has to be "Tournament of hearts". (The line: "... Why can't I draw right up to what I want to say?" is me.)

Curious about the band I surf the innerweb for info. I find out that the band is from Winnipeg, Manitoba (no huge surprise there, eh?) and that the Canadian indie rock band "blends punk-inflected folk-rock with literate, introspective lyrics". And that's what I like about the singer, I can actually make out the lines he's singing - unlike, say, Tori Amos (hey, I like her music and a have several albums, but I can't help but think "WTF is she singing now?" when I'm listening to her songs).

Anyhoo, I was listening to "Plea from a cat named Virtue" when I decided to look up the lyrics too; they're obviously from a cat's perspective. And I couldn't help but wonder if these are thoughts that have crossed Saffron's mind. So, Krista (and Saffron) this is for you. Sorta.

Why don't you ever want to play?
I'm tired of this piece of string.
You sleep as much as I do now, and you
Don't eat much of anything.

I don't know who you're talking to
I made a search through every room,
But all I found was dust that moved
In shadows of the afternoon.

And listen,
About those bitter songs you sing?
They're not helping anything.
They won't make you strong.

So, we should open up the house.
Invite the tabby two doors down.
You could ask your sister, if
She doesn't bring her Basset Hound.
Ask the things you shouldn't miss:
Tape-hiss and the Modern Man,
The Cold War and Card Catalogues,
To come and join us if they can,

For girly drinks and parlor games.
We'll pass around the easy lie
Of absolutely no regrets,
And later maybe you could try
To let your losses dangle off
The sharp edge of a century,
And talk about the weather, or
How the weather used to be.

And I'll cater
With all the birds that I can kill.
Let their tiny feathers fill
Disappointment.

Lie down;
Lick the sorrow from your skin.
Scratch the terror and begin
To believe you're strong.

All you ever want to do is drink and watch TV,
And frankly that thing doesn't really interest me.
I swear I'm going to bite you hard and taste your tinny blood
If you don't stop the self-defeating lies you've been repeating
Since the day you brought me home.
I know you're strong.

Cyndi takes you "Into the night life"

They both emerged in the early 80s pop scene, but Cyndi Lauper and Madonna are rarely compared to one another musically. However, Cyndi's new CD "Bring ya to the Brink" is pure dance confection and will give Madonna and her "Hard Candy" a run for disco domination.

The video for the single, "Into the night life", was recently released. Crowded dance floors, same-sex canoodling and Cyndi Lauper? What's not to like? (The video was shot at NYC's Splash bar, where Cyndi used to go to dance the night away.)

Cyndi has been a supporter of gay rights throughout her carreer (her sister Elen is out). Her second annual True Colors Tour for gay rights kicked off May 31 and runs through the beginning of July; Cyndi's one of this year's Celebrity Grand Marshals and the True Colors show at the Greek Theater in Berkely on June 29th will act as Grand Finale for this year's San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration.

Cyndi worked with top dance producers like Dragonette ("Grab a hold"), Kleerup (who remixed Robyn's "Every heartbeat") and Basement Jaxx ("Rocking chair"). The songs on the album all have a beat to it and they make you want to shake your booty (or nod your head to the rhythm).

By the way, the rendition Cyndi did of "True colors" at the Gay Games closing ceremony two years ago gave me goose bumps. (The only musical accompaniment she had was a lady dressed up as Abe Lincoln playing the violin.)

Ear pleaser: Nicole Atkins

I've been hearing this song ("The way it is") regularly on an alternative radio station for the past few weeks and I really really like it. I didn't found out who it is, until a couple days ago: Nicole Atkins.

This reminds me of A Girl Called Eddy. Speaking of which, what has Erin Moran been up to lately? Her debut album (aptly named "A girl called Eddy") dates from 2004. Anyone?

Nieuw K's Choice album in 2010

We hebben K’s Choice on hold gezet.

GERT: Sleur klinkt zo negatief.

SARAH: Die kans is heel, heel klein.

Sharleen Spiteri solo (sneak)

Those of you who read my blog regularly - or are into Texas and Sharleen Spiteri - can rejoice. Click here to download a new song called "That was a lie" for free. It gives you an idea of how the rest of her album ("Melody") sounds like; it fits the current trend in music where artists are obviously inspired by 60s and 70s music (think Duffy, Amy Winehouse... The Ronettes, Dusty Springfield, The Vandellas etc.) Me like!

Sharleen will be promoting "Melody" and will perform for tv:

RIP: Danny Federici (1950-2008)

Has Spring finally sprung?

Initially it looked like this week was going to be one filled with rain, like the previous two. But lo and behold; after a greyish Monday, things picked up yesterday. And today was full of sunshine as well I am so glad for that. Thinking of what Krista, her mom and her uncle asked me about Winters in my country I think I can now definitely say that they are mild, and resemble the ones in Vancouver: lots of rain and days are pretty grey.

I'm definitely happier with the sun around (not that I'm gloomy without it) and with Spring slowly settling in, I suddenly start to see and hear things differently. Like, I've been hearing this song by Danish band "Alphabeat" for several weeks now and I never really noticed it before. Now I just hum or whistle along when it's on the radio; it's an upbeat uptempo song that certainly fits my current mood

Judge for yourself:

Sara Bareilles in the Netherlands

Yesterday I arrived late at work; Sara Bareilles was in the Netherlands to promote her (current) album "Little voice". She was in 3FM's breakfast show and I was curious about her and her music.
Sara played two songs: "Love song" and "Bottle it up". Even though it was only sometime after 8 in the morning, her voice sounded super. She explained that Love Song was basically a song she wrote after getting frustrated when another bunch of her songs got rejected (the honchos of the record company didn't deem them hits).

Giel, the show's host tried to teach her some Dutch (with some really bad translations!) but she's a good sport and she gave it her best shot. Personally, I wouldn't teach anyone the c-word. But that's just me. She managed to avoid it though :)
Anyhoo, like I posted before: it's high time she gets some fame outside the US!

Some great songs I forgot about

I've been listening to Studio Brussel for the past weeks. This Flemish mainstream alternative radio station is celebrating their 25th anniversary and I've heard loads of songs I hadn't heard in years. Talking about eargasms! Here are a few:

"Song to the siren" by This Mortal Coil

I'm not sure what attracted me to this song (I hadn't heard of Tim Buckley then, and I couldn't make out most of the lyrics). Maybe it was the fact that the song didn't sound like most songs I had ever heard on the radio.

"Here's where the story ends" by The Sundays

The singer's voice sounds a little too sweet for my usual liking, but listening to the guitar parts I felt this song was hugely inspired by another British band: The Smiths.

"Pride (in the name of love)" by U2

Forget "With or without you" (no offense, Chris). This song grabbed me from the very start. Great riff and lyrics that's an actual record of an event (although there is an inaccuracy in time - but who cares, eh?).

"Blue Monday" by New Order

I used to be partial to human made music, but that slowly started to change as I grew older and being exposed to bands like New Order. Back then I wasn't aware that New Order basically was Joy Division's reincarnation, or so to speak. I think I danced to this sometime last year at some dance party...

"Birth, school, work, death" by The Godfathers

Sort of my signature adolescent song

"Someone" by The Rembrandts

The Rembrandts were never big in my country, which I think is too bad, since they've written great songs. Seriously, forget the "Friends" theme song! Although catchy, I don't like most love songs (too sappy, overdone etc.) but I feel that this one shines due to the simplicity in lyrics and music, and somehow seems real enough. Thank you Studio Brussel for reminding me of this one; Mirthe and I used to play our acoustic rendition until a few years ago...

"The day brings" by Brad

Another underrated band - imo.

Tennessee's introduction to Sarah Bettens

Knoxnews's Wayne Bledsoe interviewed Sarah Bettens and his article was published on Friday, March 14, 2008:

From Antwerp to Santa Cruz to East Tennessee, Bettens' choice is Johnson City

Belgian-native Sarah Bettens says, as a teenager, she insisted she'd never move from her hometown. Then she began spending most of her year touring with the band K's Choice. "Now I feel like I can live anywhere and be comfortable."

Sarah Bettens is a long way from home, but home has come to mean something different to the Belgian-born pop singer.
"Making the move from Belgium to Santa Cruz, Calif., and then Johnson City, Tenn., was pretty drastic," says Bettens, in a call from her home in Johnson City.

Bettens is best-known as the vocalist in K's Choice, which had an international hit with the song "Not an Addict" in 1996. The group went on hiatus in 2003.
Bettens moved to Johnson City to live with her partner and her partner's two children six years ago. Her second solo album, "Shine," was released in Europe in late 2007 and will be released in the United States soon.

"I've really grown to love it here," says Bettens. "When I'm in Europe for three weeks I really crave being back here and watching people take time for their kids and not having every wife have to work to make ends meet. People have a pretty high standard of living here - even people not making tons of money. So many other places in the world everyone is just scrambling just to make the monthly overhead."
She says she enjoys simpler things in East Tennessee - making new friends and just spending time with her family.
"We're close to the lake and we go camping and we're close to Asheville, where we go a lot. I've really grown attached."

Sarah and Gert Bettens (Sarah's brother) started K's Choice in early 1993 in Antwerp, Belgium, after both had been in a band called the Basement Plugs. After Sarah got some interest for a solo single, she and Gert recombined efforts to create K's Choice (the name is a reference to Josef K from Franz Kafka's novel "The Trial").
While "Not an Addict" became a hit in countries around the world, Sarah says the video was not added to MTV's playlist.
"'Not an Addict' was so obviously not a pro-drug song," says Bettens. "If you took a half second and listened to it you'd know there was no way I was advocating drugs, but just the fact that that was the subject matter made it super-sensitive. ... People are so scared that you're going to cross the line and they'll be responsible for it."

K's Choice earned a good following in Europe and Australia and a respectable audience in the United States. However, after a decade with the band, Sarah says the siblings needed some time apart. The two have just recently begun working on some new material together after a five-year split. Gert will, in fact, join Sarah at her Knoxville show and the two will perform both solo and K's Choice material.
Although it retains a pop edge, Bettens' solo work has an almost Americana feel to it. Bettens says her songwriting has benefitted from living in different places.
"So many things are almost brainwashed into us as we grow up," says Bettens. "That's how our parents see it or that's how our country sees it. You don't have the opportunity to see it from someone else's side. Having lived in so many different places, I feel like that has made me a lot less black and white than I used to be and a lot more forgiving. There is so much gray area that I really didn't really know about 10 years ago."

She also says that being in a good and happy place in her personal life allows her to write from the perspective of others more easily, rather than always relying on her own life for material.
"I definitely don't feel like I'm running out of things to get angry or happy or sad about just because I have stability in my life. I feel it a lot when I go back to Belgium: You just have a lot more credibility if things are going bad for you. If you had a bad childhood or there's some drugs involved, those are pluses! Being the daughter of a pediatrician and having a pretty cushy childhood and my parents are still together - those are things that work against me!"
Bettens laughs.

Granted, many audiences seem to prefer their artists to be tortured and depressed and some artists do seem to create their strongest work when they are in the worst emotional shape.
"I hope that's not the case," says Bettens, "because I'm going to make some really bad records over the next couple of years!"

She laughs.

"The time of times" - Badly Drawn Boy

I was reminded of it recently: it's a song I don't mind driving to late at night "The time of times" originally appeared on Damon Gough's (aka Badly Drawn Boy) album "Born in the UK" (yes, the title was inspired - in a good way - by Springsteen's "Born in the USA"), but apparently Damon updated to song for a movie called "Definitely maybe" (uh... That's the title of an Oasis album).

"The time of times" by Badly Drawn Boy

Oh, sweet morning
Is your head not right
Did you hear my warning
This is the time of times

And your head feels like your body
You mind is close behind
There’s a teardrop on your shoulder
Says this is the time of times
It’s the time of times again

This is the time of times
It’s the time of times again

Oh, sweet morning
And your head's not right
Did you hear my warning
This is the time of times

And your head feels like your body
Your mind is close behind
There’s a teardrop on your shoulder
Says this is the time of times
It’s the time of times again

The time of times
Yeah this is the time of times

More news on Sharleen Spiteri's new album

On March 20 Sharleen received an Icon Award at this year's Capital Awards.
The ceremony was held at a London hotel and organized by London based radio station Capital FM.
The award was unexpected, but a nice surprise nonetheless. Congrats, Sharleen!

Watch the acceptance clip here.

Sharleen also revealed that her upcoming album is 1950s doo wop style, "kind of Nancy Sinatra meets Francoise Hardy". Sounds very interesting to me.

Watch the interview here.

News on Sharleen Spiteri's solo album

The title of the album will be "Melody" and the first single taken from that album is "All The Times I Cried". The single will be released in June.

The album has mainly been recorded at the Satelite studios and Shar's house, and partly at Park Lane studios in Glasgow as well and was produced by Sharleen herself. Some tracks of the album are co-written and co-produced by Bernard Butler (who's recently produced Duffy's album "Rockferry" as well). Watch Bernard in this clip (he's the guitar player). In reference to Duffy's album: do you recognize his "Wall of Sound" style of producing songs? It's something I definitely noticed after he left Suede to persue a solo carreer.

Anyway, I digress. A tour in intimate venues will follow afterwards to suit the sound of the album. And hopefully she will cross the North Sea to mainland Europe.

In the meantime, a little reminder of Sharleen's soulful vocal abilities (dating from several years ago):

Jeff Healey (1966-2008)

I think I was in shock when I heard the news of Jeff Healey's passing. It was around 7:30 am and I was getting dressed.

I never saw him live, but I have seen several live performances (concerts) on tv, and I can safely say I was impressed by his guitar playing skills - not to mention his unique way of playing by having his guitar flat on his lap.
I even watched "Road House" (starring Patrick Swayze, and a very leggy Kelly Lynch) because I know Jeff had a part in it. Jeff also discovered and helped develop the careers of other artists like Amanda Marshall.

The virtuoso player (41) died in a Toronto hospital of a rare cancer, retino blastoma, that he had fought since birth and which claimed his eyesight at the age of one.

At the time of his death, he was about to release his first rock-blues album in eight years, "Mess of Blues." The CD will be released in March and April in North America and Europe, respectively, and he was slated to perform in Britain, Germany and the Netherlands. All of that's been cancelled now.

UPDATE: my Facebook friend Wendy sent me this link.

Life of Agony

I just remembered to tell my brother (HEY, ARNOLD!) I ran into Life of Agony singer Keith Caputo last Sunday. A tiny man (about my height). Big voice.

Their debut album "Life of Agony" is one of the many albums that helped me through rough times. The lyrics to most of the songs on that album reflected what I felt I was going through when words failed me. Listening to the album I would often just lie on my bed with my eyes closed and think of ways to change me, and the situation I was in.

Sarah & Gert Bettens cover Crowded House's "Better be home soon" too!

I was browsing YouTube for new Sarah clips when I came to this one; I couldn't believe she and her brother also covered this great song! Mirthe and I have been playing this for years now.

Wow.

I'm quiting the band (2)

So the announcement happened sooner than planned. And definitely not the way I planned it. Apparently, my friend Mirthe had been thinking the same thing along the same lines and sent out a general E-mail to everyone in the band this morning. Needless to say I replied to it (shortly before lunch break) and while I was at it I figured I might as well send it to everyone involved. The thing is I wanted to tell everyone in person. That's why I wanted to wait till (after) the rehearsals.
When I checked my E-mails after having home made sushi for dinner, and sparring with my brother, I was surprised at the amount of responses! I was even more surprised to read that the band is, well, disbanded. Was I really the leader, the glue that kept the bunch together? I'm still surprised; I really didn't see that coming. I figured the rest will continue without me. And without Mirthe.

I talked to H on the phone and, even though she thinks it's too bad, she understands my decision. She's glad that Mirthe now has the confidence she previously lacked (before Mirthe joined the band), and she also thinks Mirthe is a great singer. She also talked about her ex, temporary replacement drummer J (who is now in Toronto, ON) who thinks I'm a really great guitar player. Tough cookie and a great guitar player - that's what she said. That made me laugh. Then I remembered to say thank you when someone is complimenting me. So I did. H thinks J might be up for a jam once J's back from Canada...

A couple of friends were very surprised to learn I quit; they didn't see that one coming. Well, see, I may be nerdy, I can talk about stuff other than music and guitars! And seriously, I think there will be other opportunities to join some band, or even try and found one myself. Mirthe's in.

I'm quiting the band

After leaving Chicago, Il. back in 2006 I met up with a nice lady, H, who was looking for musicians to start a band. I was one of the people who responded and made it through the auditions.
I've always enjoyed rehearsals. So much, that driving 2 hours to and 2 hours from the rehearsal studios in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, was worth it.
Then H got a job at the Dutch ambassy in Moscow, Russia, and she had to quit the band. A turbulent time full of member changes started. I stuck with the band the entire time - together with the drummer and bass player. Then things started to settle down several months ago, and I thought we could start to try and glue all the individuals into the band. I thought we could try and start to play more uptempo songs as well.
People didn't lack the enthousiasm, but time. Or so I thought. I've taken the so called band leader role upon me to get things moving. We managed to add several uptempo songs to the repertoire, and the band was having fun playing. I was happy.

Lately, I noticed I don't get the same satisfaction I got like at the beginning of it all. I can say I've learned a lot, not just about group dynamics, but certainly on a musical level, too.
Just before the weekend I suddenly started thinking about quiting the band. Frankly, I initially didn't pay much attention to that thought. Until a couple band members E-mailed about the rehearsals this Sunday afternoon. I realized that even though I still like rehearsing with them very much, it's not what it used to be. I became aware that musically I'm on a totally different page; my expectations, the standards (mine are higher)...
Since H is in the country for a short while and will join us for the rehearsals on Sunday, I will attend the band rehearsals one last time. I'll make my announcement at the end of it.

And because it's Valentine's Day:

... is a Dutch band hailing from Rotterdam.
Musically they've been compared to Soundgarden, Alice in Chains en Stone Temple Pilots (I dig all those bands), and I even hear The Tea Party :)

And, in case you're interested, here's the original of "Dansen aan zee" by Dutch band BLØF. Since Sarah wrote "Leef" for a Dutch movie there's no video clip.

Beth Hart's New Year's bash

I arranged the afternoon off from work and had another pre-concert dinner at wagamama with friends. A young lady called Lizzie was to be our waitress that evening. She started off in Dutch, but I was joking with my friend Mirthe in english and Lizzie easily switched to it as well. But she has an awesome flawless British accent.
EJ told us she's nice, after we were seated and waiting for our orders. She is.
She also has a good sense of humor; at one point Mirthe and EJ were ready to order dessert and spotted Lizzie cleaning off tables. They started calling her name in semi sing-song whispery voices. She actually heard them and said she'd be with us in a bit.
When she did come over Mirthe positively gleed like a little child, so I quipped: "My pet's taken with you." Lizzie responded very well, leaving my friend Mirthe slightly startled and at a loss for words. Or rather: a snappy reply - in english *lol*
EJ went for a potty break and Mirthe and I decided to personally give Lizzie a tip, instead of putting it in the collective tip jar. We did so while we waited for EJ to return. Apparently Lizzie appreciated the gesture (and our fun and easy banter) so much she gave us both a hug!
Then it was on to Paradiso - which is practically next door.

For those who aren't familiar with Paradiso, but have read about it in my blog, check out this link for more info on the venue - and to see some pics of it.

We were early. Mirthe and I had decided we were going to take seats on the balconies, while EJ was alright with mingling with the crowd on the ground floor. For once... No, let me rephrase that: this was one of the few opportunities I was able to take to have a nice overview of the stage. I was glad I'd decided to have a seat. For once.
Beth and her band were a little late when they finally took the stage, but they kicked off with a bang. Beth looked positively radiant and happy. She interacted with people in the audience, like she always does, and she paid extra attention to a group of people who'd flown in especially for the concert - and to additionally celebrate New Year's in Amsterdam. I'm sure that even when Beth gets more famous she will remain very approachable for her fans.
Anyhoo, she was joking on how Dutch coffee is so much stronger than the stuff she's used to in the US (she's not the first one to notice this - my friend Kelly in Vancouver might like Dutch brew a lot) and before performing "LA song" she tells the audience about one night with a great guy and his "jingle berry". THAT totally cracked me up. She even explained her Dutch audience what a jingle berry is, and I just about died from laughter.
As always Beth made sure everybody had a good time, but when she and her band came back for an encore it was clear there wasn't enough time to do all three songs like planned: "As good as it gets", "Am I the one" and "Whole lotta love". She had the audience vote, but they were pretty much all tied (they took out a poll, where fans could vote for their favorite song, and Beth would play the top 10). Unfortunately, she ran out of time and wasn't able to do "Whole lotta love". Is that song cursed? I had to miss out on that last time she performed it! :(

When I started my drive home I knew it was going to be misty - as it was predicted by the weather people on radio and tv. However, since no fog alert was issued I totally wasn't prepared for the density of fog I encountered. By the time I got in the middle of it I was halfway home and didn't feel like turning and drive back to Mirthe's and EJ's place.
I was dead tired already and the conditions weren't exactly helping me get home quick. At one point I actually drove over the line that seperates the shoulder from the right lane; that was the only way for me to continue my way. Needless to say I was incredibly relieved when I arrived home in one piece.

Grammy nominations shine on Canadian acts

In a strong year for Canadian talent, acts ranging from alt-rock band Arcade Fire to polka king Walter Ostanek have tallied up no fewer than 20 Grammy Award nominations among them.

Leading the pack with four is pop singer/songwriter Leslie Feist, who goes by her last name. Among her mentions, best new artist, which has not been won by a Canadian since (American-born) Robert Goulet in 1962.
Joni Mitchell and Michael Buble each received two nominations. Power-rock trio Rush will be hoping for its first ever Grammy, for rock instrumental performance.

Industry insiders say the nominations have genuine commercial value domestically.
"When a Canadian receives a nomination," said Ken Kirkwood, director of product at the HMV Canada retail chain, "they're usually (already) a household name here, but the added attention and focus they receive always helps in selling more CDs."
Kirkwood said Feist would likely benefit significantly from her nominations. Her CD "The Reminder," a contender for pop vocal album, has sold more than 500,000 copies in the United States and Canada, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
In Canada, weekly sales soared to 4,100 from 2,400 following the December 6 Grammy announcement. Unfortunately for Feist, she will be competing with six-time nominee Amy Winehouse in three of her four categories.

Buble saw weekly sales of "Call Me Irresponsible," a contender for traditional pop vocal album, increase to nearly 7,000 from around 4,000 in the same period. It is currently No. 9 on the Canadian pop chart. (Billboard)

Sarah Bettens got me star struck. Again.

Dinner at Wagamama will never be the same again; going in for a pre-concert dinner I got seated at the table next to Sarah Bettens and her band! OMFG... :-|
Even though it was last year when I met Sarah face to face for the first time (I have been to several K's Choice concerts and Sarah solo concerts) I didn't think I'd be star struck. Again. Dangit, why do I dork out everytime I meet her?!
When she - they - finished she did turn to my friends and I (we were halfway through our meals) and said with that cute Flemish accent "Tot straks". She then turned to me and said "See you later" :-d Woo-hoo!

She set the tone of the show by kicking it off with Amy Ray's "Put it out for good". I was pleasantly surprised to find this track on her new album "Shine"; even though it's an audience favorite, I didn't thought she'd record it. (Whereas the original is a little more "punk", Sarah's a bit more "rock", and I don't mind a bit either way (h) )
Like last year in Berlin she caught my eye, held it for a bit longer and did some barely seen nod to acknowledge she's seen me. Isn't that nice?

She divided the crowd into boys and girls to sing the chorus to "Scream". You can guess the outcome: there weren't many boys singing. Heh.
She also joked about "Feel me break": I explained to my friend Mirthe that people were guessing about what it's about on the forum (someone thought it was about sex, to which bass player Eric replied "That's correct". Bwahahahah).

She ended the night with a new song called "I can do better than you". (I noticed that one particular line got lost in translation: I certainly got it and I snickered, but I doubt whether the rest of the audience got it :-p )

Anyhoo, Sarah announced she'd be signing at the merch stand... So, I got something signed as well:
no name
Heh... I'mm going to frame this sucker.

Her "Hey!" before signing definitely sounded like she recognized me. Yea, kinda hard to miss that little Asian dork... I'm glad this time my mom didn't ask whether I got Sarah's number. Heh.

PS here's the setlist:

put it out for good
fine
shine
come over here

not insane

it's alright

chasing cars

not an addict
paved away

Springsteen's "magic"

Springsteen killed! It was obvious to me he was still suffering from a cold, but his voice was alright. I can't remember when I couldn't stop grinning at a concert. Heh.
After kicking the show off with "Radio nowhere" he segued into "No surrender". I couldn't believe my luck; it used to be my favorite Springsteen track back in high school.

Here's a clip in which you can witness how tight his show was. "No surrender" was followed by "Lonesome day":

The fact that "Tunnel of love" was on the set list as well was another surprise.

He appologized - twice - for the delay (his wife Patti was absent, so I figured she was still suffering from a severe cold, but I didn't mind). Another great moment was that he got informed about "Sinterklaas" and got the entire stadium to sing "Santa Clause is coming to town":

So even though the concert only lasted a little over two hours (instead of the usual three hours, I know I'm spoilt) I went home a happy camper!

Here's the setlist:

Radio Nowhere
No Surrender
Lonesome Day
Gypsy Biker
Magic
Reason To Believe
Candy's Room
She's The One
Livin' In The Future
The Promised Land
Darlington County
Tunnel Of Love
Night
Devil's Arcade
The Rising
Last To Die
Long Walk Home
Badlands

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (Tour Premiere)

Springsteen concert postponed

Tweety and I were about to leave for the venue, when my friend Sacha called and announced "Houston we have a problem". We checked Bruce's website:

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET CONCERT POSTPONED TILL TOMORROW

Tonight's concert of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street band in the Gelredome in Arnhem will be postponed till tomorrow, Saturday, December 1st. Bruce Springsteen won't be able to perform tonight, due to a severe cold. He states he is very sorry to have to postpone tonight, but does want to give the fans the show they deserve. And at this point, he feels he won't be able to do so.

However, he is convinced his health will be recovered sufficiently tomorrow night, to perform 100% up to standards.

*SIGH*

E Street Band - minus one

According to Billboard keyboardist Danny Federici, an original member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, is taking a leave of absence from the group while underground treatment for melanoma.

Beginning Sunday (November 24) in Madrid, Federici will be replaced by Charles Giordano, who previously played in Springsteen's Sessions band.
On Monday in Boston, the E Street Band's set list was tilted toward material with which Federici is closely associated, including "Kitty's Back," "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" and "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)."
"Danny is one of the pillars of our sound and has played beside me as a great friend for more than 40 years," Springsteen said in a statement. "We all eagerly await his healthy and speedy return."

Besides Springsteen, the other original E Street members are saxophonist Clarence Clemons and bassist Garry Tallent.

I'm really looking forward to the concert next Friday - and the no. 1 reason I got tickets is to see Bruce and the entire E Street Band. Or as my friend Sacha put it: this could be the last time we see them all together, since they're not getting younger... So I think it's very unfortunate Federici won't be here. I wish him a speedy recovery, though.

Missy Higgins

[...] while outspoken about environmental issues, Higgins is reluctant to talk about her personal life. Over the years there’s been speculation about her sexuality but she’s declined to claim any particular label on that front. However, when asked if she falls under CHERRIE’s moniker of ‘not-so-straight’ girls, she opens up a bit, laughs and says, “Um, yeah, definitely. I think a lot of people fall under that broad umbrella term. I think sexuality is a fluid thing and it’s becoming increasingly more acceptable to admit that you’re that way.”
That’s about as much she’ll say on the subject, admitting that she finds it difficult to talk about. “It’s hard to learn to live with the fact that people want to talk about your personal life at all and to get into sexuality and that kind of thing … I’m not that comfortable with talking about anything about my personal life. I guess it comes from being a shy person. It’s very different writing a personal song to talking about your personal life with a stranger. Most songwriters or artists begin their art because they need to find a way to express themselves because they have trouble doing it the way everyone else does through conversation. Then we get put in a position where we have to try and explain ourselves, whereas that’s the very reason we’re in that position in the first place!”
She does, however, have a final message for CHERRIE readers. “I’d like to say if you’re comfortable with who you are inside, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. I don’t think it’s necessary to have to define yourself by any label. If you’re comfortable with who you are and you know who you are on the inside, people will love you for it.”

Beth Hart rocks Paradiso again

All the concerts on her Dutch tour are sold out, except for her "New Years Eve Special" (my mom will attend that one with me and a couple of friends!) on December 31st. Anyway, a lady by the name of Tracy Curtis (I don't know if I spelled her name correctly) opened up for Beth. Very chatty. Her songs were alright; lyrics that were politically charged (Iraq) and songs that would have fit at a hippy concert.

I don't know why, but everything was running a bit late, so Beth and her band were late, too. They started off with "World without you" and everything after that is basically a blur (they played a mix of old and new songs). The venue was packed (it was sold out) and the fans were loving every second of it. The fans also know that Beth feeds off the response of her audience, and so there's lots of interaction.

All too soon the show was over (Beth and her band came back twice for encores, and played "As good as it gets" and "Waterfalls") and the audience kept trying to call her back for another encore. Alas... One of the roadies got booed when he finally started to unplugged Beth's keyboard.

I had a great night!

Happy birthday, Sharleen Spiteri!

It's November 7, again.

Happy 40th, Sharleen, and many happy returns!

I hope you'll be able to release your solo album soon, AND I also hope Texas will shortly release another album after that :)

Sarah Bettens: "Shine" and K's Choice news

Currently listening to Sarah Bettens (album: Shine)

"Shine" was released on November 2, and I have been listening to it ever since. It's a great album with uptempo pop/rock songs and some beautiful ballads. Some personal ("I can't get out" about her marriage to a man), some political ("Daddy's gun"), some poignant ("Pave the way"). Sarah recorded her version of Amy Ray's "Put it out for good" (some people know Amy Ray as the dark haired half of the Indigo Girls), an audience favorite from the moment she started playing it during her concerts. My favorite ("Driving alone") made it to the album, too. Everytime I hear this song I will remember meeting her at a concert in Berlin in April 2006. I have to add that the end result is slightly different from she and her band played back then...

Brother Gert was interviewed by Flemish newspaper "De Morgen":

It basically says that Sarah and Gert are writing new songs for K's Choice and to expect a new album in 2009.

Newton Faulkner

I've been listening to his current single "Dream catch me" a lot. Even before I went to Canada (why I didn't put it on my MP3 player, I don't know...). I really like it:

Newton's album also has his rendition of Massive Attack's "Teardrop", and I think it's not a bad cover!

Here's the awesome original:

Sarah @ StuBru

Like I posted in my previous blog: Sarah did another breakfast show this morning. This time she sang a couple of songs off her new album - live. (She replies she'd love to meet Bonnie Riatt, how her fans respond to her lyrics in a certain song on being bare feet, and about the amount of churches in her hometown Johnsonville, TN). AND she sang John Denver's "Country roads" to commemorate him (he died ten years ago today). She ended her set with "Rescue me".

Sarah's back!

She's currently back in Europe, promoting her new album "Shine". The release date has been pushed back a couple of times, but the album is now getting a lot of attention (also due to some marketing "tricks").

Sarah Bettens was a guest at 3FM's radio breakfast show (Dutch) this morning, and because they were having their annual 90s week (a week where 3FM DJs play music from bands/acts from the 90s only) Sarah sang her biggest hit to date "Not an addict" (from her "blissfully heterosexual period" - as she herself called it - and forming with brother Gert the core of K's Choice). She was by herself, so the rendition was acoustically. Of course. Sarah also played two songs off her new album, but they'll be aired after the 90s week is over.

Tomorrow morning she will promote "Shine" at a Flemish breakfast show (Studio Brussel) and I will tune in just to hear what she has to say, and which songs she will perform... Again: waking up to the sound of her voice is heavenly.

I got an invite to attend some kind of launch party in a city an hour away on Saturday (Sarah will be there, too, with an acoustic guitar *gasp* "Wanna jam?"), but due to prior engagements I won't be able to make it...

Happy birthday

... to Bruce Springsteen and Sarah Bettens :)

And some more Sarah (cos I think she's cute):
