"Illegal Citizens: Queer Lives in the Muslim World"

The majority in Indonesia is Muslim. I'm not. As a minority it is interesting to read stuff from a different perspective. So when I found the following article, it immediately piqued my interest:

The editor of gay Muslim magazine Huriyah has released a book about LGBT people in the Islamic World.

Afdhere Jama's book 'Illegal Citizens: Queer lives in the Muslim world' follows the lives of 33 people in 22 countries including Nigeria, Lebanon, Indonesia, Bosnia, China, India, Israel, and Ukraine.

Jama told YahooNews: 'I set out to tell the stories of people suffering everywhere. Instead, I was confronted with diverse lives, including happy ones, sometimes in places I never imagined."

The lives of LGBT people in Islamic countries, however, are not always pleasant.

'Horrible, horrible things happen,' said Jama, 'In many of these countries, people disappear without a trace. And that happens only because gay and lesbian Muslims have no voice. They can't object to abuse because, as far as anyone is concerned, they don't exist.'

Jama was born in Somalia. He moved to the USA after civil war broke out in his native country. Jama was inspired to write the book after the execution of a lesbian couple in northern Somalia in 2001. He said: 'I'm particularly passionate about transgendered people and gay women. We all know what it is to be a gay man in Pakisan or Morocco, but how many people have read stories of transsexuals or lesbians in these countries? Not many.'

Candy Girl by Diablo Cody

On my flight to San Francisco, CA, I read Laurie R. King's "To play the fool" (which my friend Mirthe gave to me, after I gave her a bunch of books I don't read anymore). Since I'd be traveling 15 hours (via London, UK) I figured it would give me plenty of time to read. I thought "To play the fool" is a great way to start my trip as the story is set in San Francisco. It mentioned places I was going to see. I finish the book by the time I get to San Fran. A great read.

Towards the end of my stay I picked up Diablo Cody's memoir called "Candy Girl - a year in the life of an unlikely stripper". I bought it after reading a random passage in the book; I like the style in which it is written. I knew I was going to enjoy the book as much as I enjoyed Juno. I did. The hamburger phone is one of the things that reminded me of the movie. (I read it on my way back home, and finished it by the time I made it to Amsterdam, the Netherlands.)

For those who haven't read it (yet); don't expect any salacious stories, because you won't find any. Just a record of some of Diablo's adventures in stripping. Some very funny, some sad. But reading it made me realize why going to a stripclub never appealed to me; the power one has over an exotic dancer (remember, you're the one with the dineros) is one that doesn't get my motor running. True, it's still money that makes the world go round, but to have a girl sweettalk (or beg, if she's different and needs to meet a certain quota) you into a lapdance for a couple of lousy dollars? That would make me feel very awkward. It is an interesting read, because Diablo lets you in on her life - her stripper life, to be exact. The decission to start stripping, the insecurities, the joys, her boyfriend, her job. Great entertainment!

Persepolis

Het is het lievelingsboek van een Joodse vriend van me, en hij heeft pas geleden ook de film gezien en raadt die al zijn vrienden aan.

Persepolis is het memoir van de Iraanse Marjane Satrapi, die haar verhaal zelf heeft opgetekend. Letterlijk. Ik heb het boek - het origineel bestaat uit twee delen, maar ik heb de eerste editie van de gebundelde versie - vorige week zondag gekocht en gisteravond uitgelezen.
Vanaf het begin van het boek is duidelijk dat Marjane opgroeit in een liberaal, intellectueel gezin. De lezer ziet hoe Iran van een modern, welvarend land verandert in eentje door oorlog verscheurd en met de verkeerde mannen aan de macht; het land gaat in een klap bijna een eeuw achteruit in de tijd!
Het boek kent naast verschrikkelijke en verdrietige momenten ook ontzettend hilarische (zoals het moment dat Marjane's vader de lerares zegt dat als haar aanstootgevend is zij haar snor moet afscheren, en het moment dat Marjane tegen een "agent" die haar verbiedt te rennen schreeuwt dat hij niet naar haar billen moet kijken als hij dat aanstootgevend vindt). Het verhaal neemt de lezer mee naar een andere wereld die door de vertelwijze erg toegankelijk is. En uiteindelijk wordt duidelijk dat mensen waar ook ter wereld uiteindelijk hetzelfde willen: liefde en vrijheid.

LEES PERSEPOLIS!

When I finished the book I suddenly realized that Marjane Satrapi's life and mine draw several parallels, and that's what drew me into her story.
I've never known war - not like she has - but until my parents divorced there was a continuing war at home. One that could not be heard, but one that could be felt; tension so thick it could be cut with a knife.
Like Marjane's parents, my mom encouraged me to be strong and independent, to use my eyes and ears and brains. I was a kid that questioned a lot (if not everything) - I think I drove my mom crazy at times.
In my own way I've always rebelled against my father, even though it meant I got beat up for "disobeying" him (he had ridiculous rules that only applied to me and not to my brother). And by the time other kids my age went through puberty with their insecurities, I found myself trying to remain sane in a home that was anything but healthy. I took care of my brother, and looked after my mom. Apart from the physical changes I think I skipped puberty.
It was great to see how Marjane rebelled against the establishment in her country. Reading about the protests when she was little (what courageous people!) and telling off a "police officer" to not look at her ass And how heartbreaking it was to see her parents making that hard decission to send their daughter off to Europe to keep her safe from the war. That forced Marjane to grow up more quickly...

Anyhoo, I start to digress. Persepolis is a great, gripping read. (It's a graphic memoir where the pictures sometimes say much more than the dialogues.)
I'm hoping this movie will come to my country soon! Especially after reading it's been banned in some countries where "Persepolis" is deemed anti-Islamic. The people who say that either haven't read it properly or don't get it (and are too stupid to admit); from the start of the book it's clear that it isn't a religion that sets back a beautiful country by almost an entire century, but the people in charge.

The Snowman

When I was little I often borrowed "The Snowman" by Raymond Briggs from the local library. I really really liked that story of how the snowman came to life and took the boy for an incredible journey. Flying! I later found out it was turned into a cartoon movie - which has annual reruns on the BBC:

Illustrator by day, drummer by night

Some of you know I'm a guitarist in a band. The drummer, Flos, is a freelance illustrator who recently promoted a children's book: "Waar zijn mijn oren?" (Where are my ears?)

She sent me a card today, which I posted above  Nice, eh?

Jongensdroom

Toen ik maandagochtend wakker werd wist ik dat er iets heel erg mis was: knallende hoofdpijn (normaal gesproken heb ik nooit hoofdpijn), duizeligheid, oorpijn en een keel die aanvoelde alsof die bewerkt was met grof schuurpapier. Na mezelf ziek te hebben gemeld (voor het werk) ben ik mijn bed weer ingekropen en heb tot een uur of 4 's middags geslapen. Na een licht groentesoepje naar binnen gewerkt te hebben ben ik weer m'n bed ingekropen en viel meteen in slaap (al dat binnen een tijdspanne van een half uur...).
De tweede dag ging beter (de keelpijn was weg) en het lukte me zelfs, tussen het slapen door, een kinderboek genaamd "Jongensdroom" te lezen.
"Jongensdroom" van Lorna Minkman gaat over de 17-jarige David, die als Sanne geboren is, maar sinds een aantal jaren als jongen door het leven gaat. Het boek heeft naast David nog twee andere belangrijke personages: Tess en Menno, en zij vertellen samen met David het verhaal. Het gaat niet alleen over David's pogingen om op een "normale" jongen te lijken, Tess's gevoelens voor David veranderen geleidelijk aan en Menno denkt dat hij een vriendschap met David op aan het bouwen is.
Ondanks dat er vanuit drie oogpunten wordt verteld, blijft het allemaal heel overzichtelijk en toegankelijk (mede dankzij het heldere taalgebruik). Het is het soort boek dat ik 15, 20 jaar geleden uit nieuwsgierigheid uit de bibliotheek had meegenomen.

Wat de griep betreft knap ik hopelijk gauw op, want ik slaap nog steeds het grootste gedeelte van de dag weg en dat is ook erg vermoeiend!

O, en het ironische is (ik voelde het aankomen) dat vriendin Krista sinds dinsdag ook ziek thuis ligt (al geeft zij die Turkey dinner die ze maandag op het werk had de schuld...). Ook mijn broertje Arnold en Kelly (een vriendin van me in Vancouver) zijn geveld door de griep-virus :p

Even though the Strangers in Paradise series has ended, creator Terry Moore drew up this bitty of Katchoo and Francine for all the (loyal) fans. I have to say that even though I was saddened by David's death, this pic is a bit like the proverbial icing on the cake.

The truth about Dumbledore

J.K. Rowling finally put a stop to all the speculations and rumours: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. The author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall.

After reading briefly from the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," she took questions from audience members. She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love."
"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause. She explained that Dumbledore fell in love with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down."
Dumbledore's love, she observed, was his "great tragedy."

Rowling, 42, said if she had known that would be the response, she would have revealed her thoughts on Dumbledore earlier.
"Oh, my god," Rowling concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction."

Rowling told the audience that while working on the planned sixth Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," she spotted a reference in the script to a girl who once was of interest to Dumbledore. A note was duly passed to director David Yates, revealing the truth about her character.

Potter readers on fan sites and elsewhere on the Internet have speculated on the sexuality of Dumbledore, noting that he has no close relationship with women and a mysterious, troubled past. And explicit scenes with Dumbledore already have appeared in fan fiction.

Rowling, finishing a brief "Open Book Tour" of the United States, her first tour here since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority."
Not everyone likes her work, Rowling said, likely referring to Christian groups that have alleged the books promote witchcraft. Her news about Dumbledore, she said, will give them one more reason.

To me, this doesn't come as a surprise. I had my suspicions as I read about Dumbledore and Grendelwald in "Deathly Hallows", but I also figured that if it were true it would be revealed sooner or later   This brings me to the next point, though; with so many characters surely there must ba at least one lesbian?!

Deathly Hallows and the Order of the Phoenix

I finished the last book in the Harry Potter series. I made myself read deliberately slowly, to enjoy it longer, but as the story progressed and the ending drew nearer I found it more and more difficult to put Deathly Hallows away.
Deathly Hallows delivered, after a disappointing Half Blood Prince; it was a gripping read right from the start. The formula (pattern) for the books is clear to avid readers, but the predictability of it didn't stand in my way of thouroughly enjoying Deathly Hallows.
It was nice to see things I've been suspecting all along were finally confirmed (I was right about Snape all along!) and the ending nicely wrapped up the saga. Also, I'm not a person that gets emotional easily, but towards the end of the book I found myself swallowing away a lump in my throat a time or two...

After Marelle and her husband came back from a vacation in Iceland, we picked a date to see the latest Harry Potter movie (it was on the eve of the premiere and the book was about to hit the shelves). Tonight was the night :)
We first had a nice dinner, catching up on things, before heading to the cinema. It was unusually quiet when we got there. And that's when my friend noticed we both were wrong about the showing time; the movie had already started (about ten minutes earlier). We sneaked in, snickering about our own silliness - and we quickly took seats in one of the front rows (during the intermission I told Marelle we missed the attack of the Dementors).
Seeing Tonks I realized she wasn't at all what I'd expected; a pleasant surprise, though, and she looks rather fetching. I liked the fact that, like in the books, her hair changed colors (and seem to underscore her emotions). Umbridge is a really nasty piece of work. Sadistic is a good way to describe her.
It was great to see all the actors all grown up (Ron, Hermione, Ginny etc.) and I think the script writers and producer did a good job translating 600+ pages into an almost 2.5-hour-film. (It sure didn't feel like the film was that long.)
There were two things that stood out immediately: Cho's accent and the battling scene.
The actress, Katie Leung, who plays Cho Chang is Scottish, but right before the actual snog fest her brogue was gone and she suddenly speaks "proper" British. Eh?!
I remember the battling scene as very intense and of epic proportions, but on screen it was quick and over before one could say "Stun his @$$!" A bit of a disappointment for me...
Anyhoo, can't wait for the next one!

HP's breaking the Sabbath?

JERUSALEM - The figure responsible for Israel's latest religious row is a bespectacled British teenager who is gifted with magical powers, world famous and entirely fictional.

The synchronized worldwide launch of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the seventh and last installment in the wildly popular series, falls at 2:01 a.m. local time this Saturday — on the Jewish Sabbath, when Israeli law requires most businesses to close.
With Israelis already clamoring for "Deathly Hallows," many bookstores are planning to launch the book at the appointed hour. That has drawn fire from Orthodox Jewish lawmakers, including Industry and Trade Minister Eli Yishai, who threatened to fine any store that opens Saturday.
"Israeli law forbids businesses to force their employees to work on the Sabbath, and that applies in this case as well. The minister will fine and prosecute any businesses which violate the law," said Roei Lachmanovich, a spokesman for Yishai, of the ultra-0rthodox Jewish Shas party.

Avraham Ravitz of the United Torah Judaism Party slammed the Potter books for their "defective messages."
"We don't have to be dragged like monkeys after the world with this subculture, and certainly not while violating our holy Sabbath," Ravitz said in a statement.
Steimatzky, Israel's biggest bookstore chain, is holding a gala event in Tel Aviv beginning Friday night to launch the book, and the company has no plans to change the time, said spokeswoman Alona Zamir.
"We're required by our agreement with the book's publisher to launch the book at the same time as everywhere else in the world," Zamir said.
The chain has already received tens of thousands of advance orders for "Deathly Hallows" in English, with the book's Hebrew translation due out close to the end of 2007, she said.
Worldwide, the Potter books have sold more than 325 million copies, have been translated into at least 64 languages, and have been spun off into a hit movie series.
The book's author, J.K. Rowling, has indicated that two characters die in the new book, leading to speculation that one of them might be Harry himself. (AP)

Meet my daemon

A few years ago I bought Philip Pullman's trilogy "His Dark Materials" (if you like The Chronicles of Narnia or Harry Potter, you'll probably like this, too - but "His Dark Materials" has so many layers and parallels). I got it with the intention to take it with me on the Trans Mongolia Express, but I ended deciding against it: the trilogy was a little too heavy to take with me on my journey... Anyway, for those who have read it and didn't know it yet; the book is turned into a movie: The Golden Compass is going to be released in December

Read it here :) SiP is not just another graphic novel, it's a story about people (you can actually relate to on one level or another). The characters are complex, flawed and well rounded. I recommend Strangers in Paradise to anyone who likes a good (and sometimes gripping) read.

Nederlands bekendste bioloog heeft zopas een nieuw boek geschreven, 'Lichamelijke oefening' (Uitgeverij Contact), waarin hij korte metten maakt met de overtuiging dat sport goed is voor een mens: 'Dieren doen niet aan sport en zijn toch zo fris als een hoentje. Misschien moeten we eens wat meer laten en minder doen.'

'Iedere keer schrik je toch weer,' aldus Midas Dekkers. 'Je wandelt in het bos. Aangemoedigd door de zon in de takken, het gejubel van de merels, een vroege hommel, staan je ogen en oren wijd open, en vooral ook je hart. Verzoend met het bestaan heb je filters en veiligheden uitgeschakeld om de natuur beter in je op te zuigen. En dan gebeurt het. Batwoman bats for pink team

Ever wished (or suspected) Batwoman was gay? Well, you are about to be right! Check this out.

Comic book heroine Batwoman is to make a comeback as a "lipstick lesbian" who moonlights as a crime fighter, a DC Comics spokesman has confirmed. Batwoman, whose real name is Kathy Kane, will appear in 52, a year-long DC Comics publication that began this month.
In her latest incarnation, she is a rich socialite who has a romantic history with another 52 character, ex-police detective Renee Montoya (Kate is now dating a doctor).
52 will be published in the UK as a graphic novel by Titan Books in 2007.
(Just so you know: the series is set in a world in which established superheroes like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman no longer play a part.)

Looks like I have something to look forward to ;p

I was saddened when I read the following on the Strangers in Paradise site earlier this week - but, I guess, all good things must end...

Dear Reader,

The time has come to make it official.

After so many years and so much of my life invested in this series I can hardly imagine doing anything else. But SiP is a story and, like all stories, must come to an end. The final chapter of Strangers in Paradise will be issue #90. That book is scheduled to hit the shelves May 2007.

Thank you for your support all these years. Now take a deep breath, grab a drink if you need it, and get ready for the ride of your life. This last arc is a killer.

After 80 years in Hundred Acre Wood Winnie the Pooh is to get a female friend; Disney is working on a new Winnie the Pooh TV series, to come out in 2007, that will replace Christopher Robin with a 6-year-old girl.
USA Today reported that the Company has decided to pair Pooh up with a red-haired tomboy for its series. Disney hopes to attract an older audience by introducing a 6-year-old tomboy as friend to Tigger, Pooh and Piglet. The Disneyfied characters also will have a new look.

Now, everybody sing: "Who's that girl?"

Karin Slaughter signeert

Shit. Heb ik weer... Ik dacht er zojuist aan dat Karin Slaughter één dezer dagen richting Nederland en België zou komen voor signeersessies. Het is me met wat googlen gelukt om een aantal data te achterhalen (ik kon ze helaas niet op haar site terug vinden). Ik ga proberen om a.s. zaterdag met één van mijn reeds gelezen kopieën naar Den Haag af te reizen om die gesigneerd te krijgen; ik weet niet of dat gaat lukken gezien de afspraken die er reeds voor het komend weekend gepland staan.

Ik heb een keer eerder geprobeerd om een (ook reeds) gelezen roman van Anne Marie MacDonald gesigneerd te krijgen. Het viel toevallig samen met het afscheidsfeest van een vriendin van me die toen in Amsterdam woonde en naar Curaçao ging verhuizen. Het signeren zou plaatsvinden bij Scheltema en dat zou dus prima te combineren zijn. Helaas las ik een paar dagen voor de geplande datum dat die sessie afgelast was (de reden hiervoor stond er niet bij vermeld)... Dat heb ik weer :( Het afscheidsfeestje was desalniettemin erg gezellig.

Vannacht kwam ik erachter dat er een nieuw deel uit is van Strangers in Paradise! Ik zou 'm alleen al kopen vanwege de cover:
*LOL* Geef toe dat het er spannend uitziet... Even ter verduidelijking: de littekens op Katchoo's armen zijn geen resultaat van zelfmoordpogingen, maar een resultaat van verschillende gevechten in het verleden van de hoofdpersoon*. (Ik zal binnenkort een tripje naar de American Book Center in Mokum moeten maken; ik heb ondertussen lang genoeg gewacht!)

Hmmm, het zal welllicht aan mij liggen, maar ik moet zeggen dat het plaatje me doet denken aan de cover van Melissa Etheridge's album "Never enough":

Wat denk jij? Ik wil hier absoluut niet impliceren dat schepper Terry Moore plagiaat heeft gepleegd - mensen die het stripverhaal (of moet ik zeggen strip-roman?) kennen zullen dit beamen. Terry Moore levert elke keer weer een editie af met realistische (en bij vlagen erg humoristische) dialogen en interessante plotwendingen. Erg komisch is dat hij zichzelf heel af en toe als figurant in een scene laat opdraven: het is altijd dat sullige kalende mannetje. Strangers in Paradise loopt al een aantal jaren en hij heeft er - terecht - prijzen voor gekregen (waaronder een GLAAD Media Award, zonder dat SiP uitgesproken gay is).
In deze strip spelen de vrouwen de hoofdrol (het zijn voornamelijk sterke en zelfstandige vrouwen), wat overigens niet wil zeggen dat alle mannen in het verhaal losers zijn. In het geval van Tambi bedoel ik sterk ook in fysieke zin, want vechten kan ze (getuige de littekens op haar armen):

Absoluut butch (maar mijn hemel wat een lijf), en op het internet zijn er interessante discussies gevoerd over Tambi - niet alleen over haar uiterlijk, maar ook over haar voormalige werkgeefster Darcy Parker ("Satan in a dress")... Toch denk ik dat Tambi het hart op de juiste plaats heeft; hoofdpersoon Katchoo en Tambi zijn met elkaar verbonden en je ziet dat dat gegeven Tambi's handelingen kleurt. (*Katchoo heeft lang geleden ook voor Parker gewerkt.) Eenmaal onder het juk van Darcy Parker vandaan lijkt Tambi langzaamaan zelfs iets milder te worden. Interessante bijkomstigheid: Tambi had een tweelingzus, Bambi (geen grapje), een fysiek evenbeeld van Tambi, maar met minder scrupules. En dat heeft Bambi uiteindelijk de spreekwoordelijke das omgedaan. Dát en het feit dat Bambi dacht dat ze daadwerkelijk onoverwinnelijk was. Tja... Dom.

"Geography Club"

Het liefst lees ik thrillers, maar af en toe lees ik een grappig boek of een kinderboek om de boel in balans te houden. Een tijd terug las ik een recencie over een boek van Brent Hartinger dat "Geography Club" heet. Hij heeft een boek geschreven waarin een fictief  groepje scholieren op een middelbare school in Amerika centraal staat.
Hoofdpersoon Russel "Russ" Middlebrook weet dat hij homo is, maar houdt dat angstvallig geheim - iets dat heel begrijpelijk is en herkenbaar. Zijn beste vriendin Min (half Chinees) blijkt biseksueel te zijn en in het geheim een vriendinnetje te hebben. Russel's beste vriend Gunnar is hetero, maar niet het type waar meisjes voor in katzwijm vallen.
Russel is verliefd op Kevin Lands en denkt dat hij de enige homo in de stad is ... totdat hij op een avond online iemand tegen komt met wie hij afspreekt.
Al gauw blijkt dat hij niet de enige homo op die school is en na een moeizame start besluit het groepje hojo's een club te vormen, zodat ze op gezette tijden legitiem bij elkaar kunnen komen.

Het boek is erg makkelijk te lezen en herkenbaar - ook voor hetero's. Er is zelfs een "loser" in de vorm van ene Brian Bund; zo eentje die het pispaaltje van de klas is (of, in dit geval, het pispaaltje van de school).
Als dit boek 15 jaar eerder was geschreven en gepubliceerd had ik het waarschijnlijk voor mijn literatuurlijst Engels gelezen. Geography Club kan ik volwassenen aanraden als "licht tussendoortje". (Mijn moeder is het ook begonnen te lezen om haar engels een beetje op te halen.)

Skin sells (but I'd rather have another tattoo)

I am annoyed - once again. I bought a magazine for its contents (no joke) to find out only later that those scantily clad models are also featured inside showing off several great guitars. The magazine I'm talking about? 2006 Guitar World Buyer's Guide.

Sex sells - I know - but if I wanted to see some skin I would've bought a different kind of magazine, don't you think? Yes, I saw the cover shoot and I honestly believed it to be the only picture "that way". Boy, was I wrong! I can't tear out the incriminating pages, since that means I would throw out overviews of guitars as well. D4MN, that's not what I want. (Oh, hey, maybe glue will do the trick!) I mean, I know scantily clad models are used in all kinds of ads for all kinds of products... But why guitars? Is it meant to make playing the guitar a macho thing again? (There's nothing unladylike about playing a guitar. Lots of guys are just worried about their tiny egos, if you ask me: they wouldn't want some "chick" to outplay them.) I don't think that's the case: Daisy Rock Guitars are designed to make it more appealing for girly girls to pick up a guitar - and those are in the magazine as well. It would be better to have people like Bonnie Riatt, Jennifer Batten, Berit Fridahl, Emilie Saliers and Ani Difranco in a "special" about female guitarists. And Michelle Branch - or whichever young female guitarist is hip with the teens these days.

Anyway, my point is: undoubtedly, this magazine will sell well, but I doubt whether all the buyers are guitar players. Now... where have I stashed that stick of glue?

Getting back - for a sec - on the subject of skin, though, is that I need to find a good studio to get a new tattoo: I'd been looking for the one dragon for a while and found it. The funny thing is that I have been thinking of getting a barcode type of tattoo as well, when I recently came across Scott Blake's awesome site: www.barcodeart.com I don't mind needles but maybe I can kill two birds with one stone, eh? My friend Sandra had her first recently done (her daughter just loves it!) and her husband is contemplating one, too. Another friend of mine is planning to get a tattoo as well - soon. I've talked to Sandra's husband about tattoos in general, but it's got nothing to do with me. I have two small ones that are roughly ten years old, so it's not like I talked them into that. I wouldn't do that. Ever. (I guess for me it's time for a new one. Or two. I know my mom will NOT be pleased.)

Zij aan zij

Mijn moeder hoefde (toen ik nog een klein meisje was) het lezen niet echt te stimuleren: ik vond het sowieso erg leuk. Ze ging tot een bepaalde leeftijd altijd mee naar de bibliotheek en hielp me met het uitzoeken van de boeken waarvan ik uiteindelijk slechts een paar mee naar huis nam. Ik herinner me nog een bepaald moment dat ik wekelijks naar de bieb ging om boeken te lenen en terug te brengen.
Ik lees nog steeds erg graag. Regelmatig en het liefst in het engels. Niet eens om "apart" te zijn, maar omdat ik dat prettig vind lezen - prettiger dan nederlandstalige boeken. Ik heb ooit een paar boeken opzij gelegd (en nooit meer uitgelezen), omdat de vertaling vanuit het Engels naar het Nederlands in mijn ogen gruwelijk slecht was.
Zo nu en dan lees ik ook bladen - van Psychologie Magazine tot The Advocate en van Guitar World tot National Geographic Traveler. Recentelijk kocht ik de Zij aan Zij; niet alleen vanwege de cover, maar omdat er een artikel in stond dat "Lesbobands" heet (op de cover vermeld als "Wilde meidenbands"). Toen ik thuis het artikel gelezen had, vond ik het toch enigszins tegenvallen en ik zal ook zeggen waarom.
De sub-titel luidt "Provocerende feministes of serieuze talenten?" Er is een korte inleiding geschreven en Le Tigre, Lesbians on Ecstasy, Erase Errata, Rockbitch (?!), Tribe 8, Tracy and the Plastics en een handjevol Nederlandse namen passeren de revue. Het is zo gedaan dat het op 3 pagina's past. Dat snap ik ook wel; de lezeres moet een overzichtelijk artikel voor zich hebben dat prettig leest. Toch had ik het gevoel dat de schrijfster van het artikel zich niet voldoende verdiept had in de materie ofwel de schrijfster begon met het schrijven van één bepaald artikel en het resulteerde in iets uitgebreiders. Op de vraag of het provocerende feministes zijn of serieuze talenten wordt niet echt antwoord gegeven - food for thought?
Ik mailde de redactie van Zij aan Zij (onder mijn nick "Dilana" is het geplaatst op 4 augustus 2005 - het is op de site terug te vinden) het volgende:
Wilde meidenbands... Aardig artikel, maar miste namen als Sleater Kinney (punk trio, waarvan twee leden in een grijs verleden iets met elkaar hadden), The Butchies (punk trio), Otep (snoeiharde metal, waarvan frontvrouwe Otep Shamaya openlijk lesbisch is), Alix Olson, Michelle Malone... Misschien een idee om hier een vervolg aan te geven? De volgende keer de "urban"-kant van de muziek? Er zijn niet veel artiesten die out zijn en hip hop, R&B of rap maken. Mz Fontaine, JenRo en Paradigm zijn de enige namen die me nu te binnen schieten.
Desalniettemin een goede manier om Nederland kennis te laten maken met de wat onbekendere wilde meidenbands/-artiesten. *Thumbs up*
Een paar dagen later kreeg ik een mailtje waarin de redactie vroeg of ik het goed vond als mijn reactie in het volgende Zij aan Zij nummer gezet werd ("Sure!" was mijn antwoord) en op de site stond:
@Dilana: hartelijk dank voor je compliment en je goede aanvulling! We zetten je reactie in onze Postbus rubriek, dan weten lezeressen meteen wat er nog meer is! Fijn!
Nu moet ik wel het volgende nummer kopen *lol*

Inkie en ik zijn gisteren naar Ladies in Lavender geweest (wij haalden de gemiddelde leeftijd in de filmzaal slechts met een fractie naar beneden). Een typisch Britse film. Erg mooi, mede vanwege de wijdse shots van de landschappen (het is in Cornwall gefilmd) en de klassieke muziek. En natuurlijk twee doorgewinterde actrices (Maggie Smith en Judy Dench) die twee geweldige - en vooral geloofwaardige - karakters op het witte doek neerzetten, alsook actrice Miriam Margolyes. (Maggie en Miriam kennen we respectievelijk als Professor McGonagall en Professor Sprout uit de filmversies uit de Harry Potter serie.) Olga, gespeeld door Natascha McElhone (uit "Mrs. Dalloway") is in deze film een schilderes die schipbreukeling en violist Andrea op weg helpt. Mij vielen plotseling haar handen op... Jammer dat niet verklaard wordt hoe vioolspeler Andrea in het water terecht is gekomen, noch wordt ingegaan op hoe het Olga verloopt nadat zij Andrea aan haar broer heeft voorgesteld. Afijn, zoals ik al eerder zei is het een mooie film. Wellicht niet één voor de MTV-generatie (het tempo van de film ligt erg laag en er zijn geen blote mensen of sex scenes), maar daarvoor produceert Hollywood legio andere films.
